Witanlore: Dreamtime - Preview @ OnlySP

OnlySP checked out the open world RPG Witanlore: Dreamtime:

Witanlore: Dreamtime | Early Access Preview

[...]

Developed by Druid Gameworks Studio, Witanlore is an open-world adventure RPG. The game begins with a lengthy, and somewhat interesting, cutscene explaining the history of the world and why the tribes of Ursine are entrenched in years of war, setting the scene for Witanlore’s adventure. Players assume the role of a young Ursine about to uncover his/her destiny by communicating with a deity through the tribe’s traditional ritual, ‘The Dreaming’. This ritual will be an opportunity for the Ursine to understand the deity’s plans for his/her future. However, a set of tasks must be completd before the player can jump into this sequence.

Lighting and map improvements are planned, alongside the implementation of skill/xp functionality, according to Druid Gameworks’ latest post on Steam. Although, updates are rare, with months passing between patches. Witanlore is growing with a clear direction and obvious potential. However, at this point in time, Witanlore is nothing more than an empty, lifeless shell of a game.

While the sword-and-shield combat system is reminiscent of a rudimentary version of that found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the world lacks enemies. Narrative is Witanlore’s strong suit with most of the quests being interesting and fun to follow, but the general lack of content draws any enjoyment to a quick close.

Witanlore is a collection of interesting ideas that is clearly too big for Druid Gameworks to handle. The direction Druid Gameworks is taking the game is clear, and, despite the slow pace at which the team releases updates, Witanlore has the potential to become exactly what Druid Gameworks first set out to accomplish.

Thanks Farflame!

Witanlore: Dreamtime - Game Update

by Couchpotato, Tuesday - March 10, 2015 04:05

Well it has been a while since Unwritten: Echoes of Twilight failed on kickstarter, and the developers latest game Witanlore: Dreamtime was funded. Here is a short recap.

In Dreamtime, the player assumes the role of a young Ursine from one of four main tribes, whose destiny has not yet been determined. At the game's start, they have reached the age of maturity known as the Chut’que (chewt kay) a time to undergo an honored ritual, the dreaming. Guided by the clan seer, the dreaming is an astral journey where Ursines travel into the spirit world to stand before their patron god and receive divine messages about their destiny.

So with that out of the way Druid Gameworks has released a few short updates.

Lots of new developers joining as we get ready for alpha!

Witanlore: Dreamtime - Update Week Begins

by Couchpotato, Thursday - December 25, 2014 05:46

Druid Gameworks released some new updates for their kickstarter game Witanlore: Dreamtime. That's right Joxer it's time for the giant Bear people again.

This year has gone by so quickly and we are so proud of how far Dreamtime has come in a very short time. In January we made the decision to put development for Witanlore: Echoes of Twilight on hold and focus on a smaller title that we could make on a much smaller budget in the wake of two unsuccessful Kickstarter campaigns in 2013.

At the start of this year Witanlore: Dreamtime was just an alt start idea for Echoes, only a couple of sentences on a page. The first quarter of the year was spent designing a completely new game from the ground up, one that centered around the ursine race while still introducing players to Arthanswold and the WItanlore series as a whole just on a smaller scale.

At the beginning of the second quarter we decided to change engines from Havok's Vision Engine to Epic's Unreal Engine 4. On the one hand, this move meant taking the time to learn a whole new software and workflow, but on the other, it took development to a completely different level with cutting edge technology as it's being developed. As Epic's engine improves, our game gets better as a result and we're very happy with the move.

By the middle of quarter three, we had quite a bit underway, even though dedicated development time had only spanned about 2 months. By August we decided to return to Kickstarter to raise a budget for some AAA quality character models. This time our crowd funding efforts were successful and we were able to raise funds to have our characters made, but also to create some additional content for the game which was awesome! The only downside was that Kickstarter is a full time job. From planning, to preparing content, to actually running/promoting a campaign, and then fulfillment, the crowd funding process significantly stalled development on Dreamtime for about 3 months.

In November we saw a real surge of progress as our full attention returned to development on Dreamtime. Former Turbine artist Ezra Cove joined the team to begin developing our character models and we saw just a blossoming of progress in all areas. Our original release goal for Episode One of Dreamtime was December 2014, but there's no way to make up the time lost on Kickstarter before year end, so our new tentative goal for Episode One is March 2015.

Dreamtime - Developing a Dream Video Update

by Couchpotato, Tuesday - August 05, 2014 05:44

Druid Gameworks has a new video update on their website for Dreamtime. You may remember they tried to kickstart a game called Unwritten last year.

Video Dev Blog #1: Developing a Dream

Development on Dreamtime is going very well and it's awesome to see the pieces starting to come together enough to actually look like a game. When the year began, Dreamtime was nothing more than a few notes in the Echoes of Twilight dev plan; an alternate start for Ursine players. Since then the story has grown and evolved to be worthy of a standalone title and we're very proud of the direction the project has taken. Considering how much of the year was spent designing the game on paper and learning a whole new engine, we're making development leaps at this point!

The dreamworld is a scene where players will travel during their vision quest to learn about their destiny from the Ursine's patron goddess, The Great Mother. The object of the scene is to navigate through the twisted, misty, world and reach the temple of the goddess in hopes of having an audience with the deity; who is said to be both beautiful and terrifying. For the first time, Dreamtime appears on film and we're really excited to show you how we turn concepts into game content every day, enjoy!

Development Notes:

The scene featured in this video dev log is still considered a work in progress even though it's getting very close to completion. We still have to fill in some of the details like an actual moon texture and light sources around the temple for example, but already the atmosphere and quiet beauty of the dreamworld is quite palpable. We'll be sharing additional video of the dreamworld in the future and you will be able to look back at this video and see how the details change the scene.

Learning a new engine and then taking what we've learned and applying it has been a challenge for our schedule at times. We're in a pretty good place now, the team has gotten the hang of the workflow in UE4, and it's all starting to come together, so we are still hopeful of a release this year. There are definitely some challenges ahead, especially financially in regards to freelance work, but we are encouraged by our progress and the continued support of Druid Fans everywhere!

If you're interested you can help fund the new RPG game.

How Can You Help?

Dreamtime's development is reaching a critical date in our timeline where work on the character models must begin soon or publishing will be delayed. Just like neurosurgery in medicine, character modeling is a specialized skill set in the world of 3D art and it can be almost impossible to find a character artist who is able to work on a profit share contract like the rest of the dev team. This means our character models need to be freelanced and we need additional funding to hire freelance artists.

The Druid Origin Guild is a funding program we created to allow our supporters to donate to our project budget while earning perks and rewards.
