RPGWatch Feature - Monster's Den: Godfall Review

by Myrthos, Wednesday - November 15, 2017 09:56

In 2015 Monster's Den: Godfall was Kickstarted by 761 people. Now the results of the labor of a single man is available and Forgottenlor crawled through its dungeons to see how good a dungeon crawler it is and surfaced again with some reservations.

Excellent combat, varied loot, and interesting character building are essential parts of a successful dungeon crawler. But those factors alone don't make a great dungeon crawler. The dungeon itself is an important part of the equation. Great dungeon crawlers take players to mysterious and unusual places, where its never clear what is around the next corner. They also offer the player a break now and again from combat. Whether its clever puzzles, enviormental hazards, scrolls full of lore, strange fountains to drink from, a story of sorts (though this is never central to a dungeon crawler), or varied locations, it is essential that a dungeon crawler mixes things up to keep combat from becoming too repetitive. Monster's Den: Godfall is an impressive one man project. Its also a fairly low priced indie dungeon crawler, and while it does many things well, in the end it forgets the “dungeon” in “dungeon crawler.”

Story

In the beginning, there were many gods. Until war came to heaven. One by one, the gods fell. Each Godfall brought with it a fierce meteor shower, as well as the sudden deaths of their worshippers. As the gods continued to fall and entire kingdoms were brought to ruin by the sympathetic deaths of the devout, many renounced their faith in the hope of being spared. Without divine protection, large numbers succumbed to possession and corruption as the demonic powers forced their entry into the world. Now, there is but one god. Her clerics exert dominance over the human remnants, ruling with an iron fist. Nomadic greenskin tribes pillage and burn their way across the land. Ambitious necromancers harvest the bones of fallen civilizations to amass undead armies of incredible size. The human heretics of the Cult of the Outward Path seek to break free from this world, risking it in the process. The dwarves of the Earthern Nations burrow ever deeper, trying to escape the madness of the surface world. Horrors wait there in the depths, ready to boil out and claim the old places. And all the while, sinister forces yet unseen lurk in the shadows and lay their plans. The fate of humanity hangs by a thread. Time to get to work.

Fifty years after the last Godfall, the winnowing of humanity has passed. The survivors and their descendants struggle to survive and rebuild in a world whose balance has dramatically shifted against them.

Monster's Den: Godfall - May Update

by Myrthos, Tuesday - June 21, 2016 12:29

Another development update from last month is for Monster's Den: Godfall, which focusses on items and equipment.

Let's take a look through some of the types of items you can expect to find in Monsters' Den: Godfall.

Loot Items

These are common items without any in-game function other than to be sold in exchange for gold. By default, these items are automatically sold when picked up. They exist to add a little flavour and flesh out the world.

Reputation Items

These are items that can be used to improve your reputation standing with a human faction, helping to unlock new items and services from that faction. Many of these items only drop from particular enemies or areas.

Basic Equipment

Magical (green) and Rare (blue) equipment is generated by taking a base item and adding a random prefix and/or suffix (blue items have both). There is wide variety in this bracket, and it will make up the bulk of your equipment through the early-to-mid game.

Advanced Equipment

Storied (teal) and Epic (purple) items are generally better than basic equipment. These items have names and stories behind them, and thematically appropriate statistics. Storied items are given a random prefix or suffix as well as their preset bonuses. Epic items have no random element to their statistics and are more powerful.

Monster's Den: Godfall - February Update

by Myrthos, Tuesday - March 01, 2016 12:27

Here is a short update on the development of Monster's Den.

This month I've been doing a bit of everything. I've been finishing leftover issues related to the optimization work that's been ongoing, and has made a huge difference to performance.

The last Monster's Den game, Chronicles, was experimental and introduced some changes that worked, and some that didn't. After player feedback on that game, one of my design goals for Godfall's battle system is to bring back more of what people liked about Book of Dread. With that in mind, it has been undergoing some design changes. This includes tying more effects to character turns rather than the battle timer, reverting the stun mechanic to a more conventional "miss a turn" effect, and reintroducing stacking poison effects. I've been tinkering with this stuff for a long time-and I'm still finding the right balance- but it's getting close.

I'm working on finishing out all of the player character skill trees. This has previously been a gradual process, adding new skills as inspiration strikes. This month it is a focus, and it will be good to have that wrapped up. (At least until the beta!)

I also lost an entire weekend to the release of XCOM2. I'm only human!

This month I'm also starting to commission artwork for the backer-created creatures and equipment that I've received so far. If you have an unclaimed reward at these tiers it's not too late, but I will need to hear from you before too long. I'll begin following up on these unclaimed rewards next month. On a related note..

And the crowdfunding campaign, which ws continued on the games' website, is now formally closed.

Thanks Eye.

Monster's Den: Godfall - January Update

by Myrthos, Wednesday - January 06, 2016 12:35

A new development update for the turn-based RPG Monster's Den: Godfall has been made availble, talking about a move, artwork, optimizations and the release date that will be missed.

The elephant in the room is the February release date I proposed during the Kickstarter. It's pretty clear at this point that I am behind schedule and will not be able to make this date. February was not unrealistic originally, but a number of things got in the way. Some of them I should have seen coming, and some were a complete surprise.

At this point I'm not willing to commit to a new date, but I can say that the ship has been righted and work on the game is progressing faster than ever before. I apologize for the hiccups, and I really appreciate your continued patience as I build towards the beta test and ultimately the final release.
