Eitr - Interview @ MCV UK

by Myrthos, Thursday - March 03, 2016 12:38

MCV have interviewed Tobi Harper and David Wright about Eitr.

Looking at the game – with its high difficulty, slow combat, red health bar and green stamina metre – Eitr has certainly taken its fair share of inspiration from the Dark Souls series.

“The idea was originally to blend elements from games like Souls and Zelda,” Wright explains. “We were also trying to blend things from the RPGs we love like Diablo, Lineage and Path of Exile. It’s a mix of all the games we enjoyed.

"Dark Souls is my personal favourite game of all time and Eitr expresses that clearly. That game shines through when it comes to Eitr’s inspirations. In the last five or ten years, Dark Souls has had a huge influence on the industry, especially on indie studios. The systems that [Souls studio] From Software designed in the game are very old school and we indies love old school games.”

Harper adds: “A lot of releases that you play these days hold your hand. Having that feeling of playing a game where you are not being led anymore and that challenges you is reminiscent of the old school games.

“That’s why it has such a strong influence on us especially because we wanted to make a game that would challenge even us, rather than something that you can play on autopilot. We wanted players to focus on what they are doing. A lot of old games like Mega Man required a lot of focus. We wanted to basically make a game we wanted to play.”

Eitr - A Mix between Diablo, Dark Souls and Street Fighter

by Hiddenx, Tuesday - December 08, 2015 19:02

An article of JStationX amd a video interview of IGN make clear that Eitr is heavily influenced by Diablo, Dark Souls and Street Fighter:

EITR Heavily Inspired by Dark Souls and Bloodborne

Speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine UK (issue #117), EITR‘s designer David Wright told the publication that “Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne – I love them to death, I’m not going to hide the fact that I was heavily inspired by those games.” The game’s enemies are incredibly tough, notes OPM, as some may fill chokepoints with poison gas, others may turn invisible and, like Souls, enemies can even interrupt your heal potion animations leaving The Shield Maiden weak during battle.

Eitr - Hands-On Impressions @ Words About Games

by Hiddenx, Tuesday - October 06, 2015 09:19

Words about Games checked out Eitr - a hack'n'slash game:

EGX 2015 | Eitr Hands-On Impressions

Before heading to EGX this year I had never heard of Eitr. In fact by the time Sunday rolled around I was still only barely aware of its existence, having only glanced its booth half a dozen times on my way to various appointments. However it came with a high recommendation from a friend on Saturday night, so I vowed to go and play it blind, with no more information other than the fact that I had to go and try it. And I’m very glad I did, so my thanks to Jennifer if you’re reading this, for turning me onto a pretty great game.

My entire experience of Eitr was that of wandering around a dungeon, lost in the darkness, occasionally coming across random groups of enemies. I was looking for the chamber I had seen others find, the one containing the enormous and deadly boss encounter, but all I kept finding were skeletons, and even they were giving me a run for my money.

Eitr is a 2D action hack and slash game that, as it turns out, takes a lot of its cues from the Dark Souls series. In the game you are cast as the Shield Maiden, a woman whose fate is destroyed after Loki unleashes the Eitr, a black substance that covers the great tree Yggdrasil in darkness. The Shield Maiden must traverse the nine Norse worlds to unravel her fate.

While a comparison to Dark Souls seems obvious given the inherent difficulty found in Eitr, the similarities run much deeper. Combat, while taking place on a 2D plane, will feel very similar to anyone who has played Bloodborne or a Souls game. It’s all about precise timing, picking your spots and your opportunities to attack without leaving yourself vulnerable to a devastating counter attack.

Blocking (providing you have a shield) and dodging are your main tools of survival in Eitr, with both being tied to a stamina bar, along with each swing of your weapon, which requires constant management to ensure that you’re not stuck without the ability to attack or dodge at a critical moment. You’re also able to parry attacks, though this requires incredibly precise timing to avoid taking a hit, if successful it leaves your enemy open to a counter attack.

Of course there’s a lot more to Eitr than that. You’ll have access to potions for healing and special attacks, both of which are in limited supply and both of which you can replenish at campfires. Ingeniously enough you can also replenish your supplies by attacking enemies. If you die a roulette wheel spins to afflict you with a random negative effect for your next run, or be something positive to help you out if you’ve died numerous times, though this feature was disabled for the purposes of the EGX demo.

There was also an extensive looking inventory system at play in Eitr, though I only got to skim the surface of it. Most of the monsters I killed dropped some kind of loot, usually a ring of some sort, that offered special bonuses to health, attack damage and a variety of other stats. These items are, of course, coded by rarity. The rarer the item the more powerful its effects, though you already knew that of course, after decades of RPG conditioning. You are also able to sacrifice carrying a shield in your offhand for carrying a second weapon, which conveys the added bonus of extra attacks at the expense of being able to effectively block.

In the end I didn’t find the boss chamber. After twenty-minutes of wandering aimlessly lost in the deep, dark dungeon I found the campfire where I had begun my journey. I maneuvered the Shield Maiden back to the place that I had found her, and had her sit by the fire, slightly better equipped and more powerful for the next poor soul who decided to sit down and continue her journey through the dark, content in the knowledge that one day I would find the boss and get smooshed by him then, instead. At least that would be in private.

Eitr is due to launch in 2016 for PC and PS4.

Eitr - Preview @ Destructoid

by Myrthos, Tuesday - June 23, 2015 12:43

Destructoid checked out Eitr at E3 and came up with this:

Eitr is pretty sweet, though. I wrote about it last year because it's a beautiful 2D Souls-like, and since then its been picked up by Devolver and heading to PS4.

There was a big skeleton boss at the end. I almost killed him, but ultimately Kenny had to do it. I kept running out of room to sidestep a homing attack. Otherwise, there's a parry you can't cancel (and can choose to attack after doing, it's not automatic), a bunch of moves you can cancel, a shield ram (or dual wielding), regular and charged attacks, special abilities (adding lightning makes subsequent attacks do more damage).

One Souls-like bit is that there is no experience. You collect Favors, which you can keep, unused, but lose if you die. These give stats bonuses. Otherwise, you can be safe and put them towards your level. There's also a fair bit of random generation, including items and a Test Your Luck-esque death penalty (which will eventually start to buff you on repeated deaths.)

Lots of cool stuff here. I look forward to trudging the spindly shield maiden through rats and skeletons next year.

And a video with talking heads and some gameplay.

Eneme Entertainment shared a new animated Pixel Art‬ Clip for their new game Eitr.

So one of the things our play-test team have been suggesting is environmental animation to bring the world of Eitr to life, our next zone reveal, the Whispering Meadows illustrates this. So check out this sneak peak GIF!

...We're itching to announce something, but can't quite yet haha! All I can say is... stay tuned.

Eitr - Interview @ Indie Game Source

by Couchpotato, Tuesday - December 16, 2014 23:39

Well I have been gone for a month due to having surgery, and I'm bored out of my mind and bed ridden right now. So what the hell I'll start posting news again.

My first post of my return is a new interview with David Wright, and Tobi Harper the developers of Eitr on a small game website called Indie Game Source.

Indie development studios all have different methods of operation. Some set strict deadlines for themselves to push forward and not get caught up on details, others determine whether or not they make a game based on successful funding strategies like Kickstarters or investors. The two man team of Eneme Entertainment have decided to take however long it takes to make their game Eitr exactly as they envisioned.

Artist and Game Designer David Wright has wanted to create games for some time and decided to follow in the footsteps of some of his favorite titles, Diablo and Path of Exile, for his own project Eitr. This combat driven exploration game was inspired heavily by Norse Mythology and follows the quest of the Shield Maiden as she tries to restore order to the 9 Norse Worlds that have been corrupted by the toxic substance known as Eitr.

With plenty of enemies, items, and areas left to create, Wright and Programmer Tobi Harper, are currently remaining quiet on their release date. Wright had plenty to say in our interview about the studios use of the Unity engine and how they are holding up financially.

Eitr - A New Mythological Norse ARPG

by Couchpotato, Tuesday - November 04, 2014 06:22

Eitr is a new ARPG game set in a Norse Mythological world made by an indie developer from the UK called Eneme Entertainment. Lets watch the video first.

Here is the games description, and link to the games website for more information.

"Eitr" is from Norse mythology, it is a black poison substance that corrupts whoever or whatever it comes into contact with. The story of the game is based around the world tree, Yggdrasil, the connector of the 9 Norse worlds, which becomes poisoned with Eitr, spewing darkness into each world.

You play as a Shield Maiden. Like other mortal Norsemen, her fate was to be determined pre-birth by the three fate-weaving Norns, but for no reason other than his own tormented sadistic gratification, Loki, the master of tricks, interfered, dripping spots of wretched Eitr into the unwoven fate loom, determining the fate of an unborn child and simultaneously causing the light to fade from Yggdrasil.

It is our Shield Maidens quest to restore the light to Yggdrasil, or watch the nine Norse worlds fade into inevitable darkness.

The game will contain various locations from Norse mythology, players will find themselves travelling through a variety of different types of natural terrain, dungeons and tombs.
