Avadon 2 - Review @ Softpedia

by Couchpotato, Friday - January 03, 2014 04:41

Softpedia has posted a new review for Spiderweb Software's Avadon 2.

Considering the scope of the game and the size of the studio, it’s not all that bad. The story has its twists and turns, there are many optional dungeons and quests, your companions have their own motivations and beliefs and remember whether you agreed or disagreed with them, there’s a bit of a moral quandary hovering about, and there are many solid hours of exploring packed in this little gem.

It may not be a streamlined experience entirely worthy of our times, but it certainly plays the nostalgia card right. Unfortunately, it takes both the good and the bad, not managing to bring enough new blood into the genre, being content with just being more of the old stuff.

If you liked the Ultima series or remember having a lot of fun with Dark Sun, then you’re certainly going to love Avadon 2: The Corruption. The game is tailor-made for die-hard classic role-playing fans and it doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not.

If you can stomach the graphics and its archaic pitfalls, it offers countless hours of fun and exploration, a good story, and an overall rewarding and enthralling experience. Above all, what it may lack in visuals and polish, it makes up for in soul. It is truly a game that has a lot to offer beyond its quaint presentation.

RPGWatch Feature - Avadon 2 Review

by Couchpotato, Friday - November 15, 2013 05:05

Fluent has taken the time to review Jeff Vogel's latest RPG Avadon 2: The Corruption.

Being a gamer and also a person who reviews games is an interesting thing. Sometimes, games come along that don't really grab you, yet you have to continue playing them in order to finish the review. Sometimes a game comes along that, when you play it, the hours seem to melt away and the review writes itself. Then, there's the rare game that drops into your lap every once in awhile that is so good that it captures your imagination from the beginning and reminds you why you loved gaming in the first place. This is my favorite type of game to review, and Avadon 2: The Corruption, the newest offering from veteran indie-RPG developers, Spiderweb Software, is a shining example of a game that will completely absorb your entire being for the many hours you spend playing it. Let's take a more in-depth look at what the game has to offer.

Avadon 2 - Review @ GameBanshee

by Couchpotato, Thursday - November 14, 2013 00:27

GameBanshee's Eric Schwarz's takes a look at Avadon 2: The Corruption in this new four page review. Here is the conclusion for the those to lazy to read the link.

Overall, Avadon 2 is very much more of the same for Avadon. What Avadon did well, in its interesting political situations that tread morally ambiguous ground, is still alive and well in Avadon 2, perhaps even better. There are also some enjoyable side-quests and a few companions I liked, even though a few too many characters were too bland and stock for my tastes. The Tinkermage character class is also something different and is more interesting to play than most of the other choices, too. Even though the overarching story itself is not very interesting, it's still a step up from the first game's.

Yet, Avadon 2 also maintains all the same issues the first game had in spades. There is too much of a focus on combat, and the combat that does make up most of the gameplay simply isn't very good most of the time. The quest design is often absurd and illogical in the way it cuts off opportunities from you arbitrarily. There's still an over-abundance of purely cosmetic choices, where a line of dialogue will change but the end result will be identical. And perhaps worst, it's simply too big and bloated for its own good, and doesn't have enough for the player to really do - that Diablo-level of depth to the character system really does lead to a mechanically shallow game on the whole.

Avadon found its niche of fans, of course, and Avadon 2 will still please those players who want more of the same, but as a sequel, and Spiderweb's umpteenth game overall, I feel these issues shouldn't be overlooked. At $10 on Steam and GOG, and $20 at Spiderweb's official site, Avadon 2: The Corruption still follows the Spiderweb mantra of providing a lot of game for your dollar, and I still do appreciate Jeff Vogel's incredible effort in building such huge RPGs with such a small team. But, take away the sheer size and ambition of the "one-man RPG studio", and the game both comes up lacking next to Spiderweb's excellent Geneforge and Avernum games, and unambitious when taken as a sequel to the first Avadon.

Avadon 2 - Review @ Digitally Downloaded

by Couchpotato, Thursday - November 07, 2013 00:23

Digitally Downloaded posted a new review for Avadon 2: The Corruption, and gave the game a final score of 4.5 /5.

If you're able to stretch your imagination beyond the visuals you're in for a rich pulp fantasy world of diabolical villains, horrific monsters and exotic villages to explore. Vogel's style of fantasy has always been rooted in the Dungeons & Dragons aesthetic of the 80's, and frankly it's good that these developers still exist, because it's a unique style that I would hate to see disappear completely.

Avadon 2 - Review @ Gear Diary

by Couchpotato, Thursday - October 31, 2013 03:46

Gear Diary has the first review for Avadon 2: The Corruption. The review doesn't give a score but the impression is they enjoyed the game.

Avadon 2: The Corruption took me more than 40 hours on my ‘review playthrough’ – and that is after already being familiar with the entire game. I would estimate that it is ~25% larger than Avadon in terms of real-world scope. Still not as big as a game like Avernum VI, but much larger than many of the RPGs we are seeing released in recent years.

One thing I really appreciated as I played was the care taken in balancing the combat systems and character classes. In nearly every encounter with disparate enemies, you will find some challenging and others trivial. Similarly your individual characters will at times be attack leaders and at others be nearly ineffective. It forces you to think about how you distribute the responsibilities of the party and brings even more strategy to the game.

In his personal blog Jeff Vogel reflects the values of loving gaming, but as a developer, husband, and parent he lacks the time to do all of the gaming he wants. I find that reflected in his development sensibilities – I never felt like he was wasting my time: by allowing me to enter regions from various points I don’t have to do excessive backtracking; by balancing the need for combat with the boredom of trash mobs my combat time felt well spent; and I never felt the need to go around bashing every barrel looking for gold nuggets like in Neverwinter Nights.

My time was appreciated, and as a result I felt constantly engaged even during short gaming sessions. It made for a very rewarding and easily recommended gaming experience.

Avadon 2 - Preview @ Invision Game Community

by Couchpotato, Sunday - October 06, 2013 00:51

The Invision Game Community has a new preview of Avadon 2 - The Corruption.

At this early stage Avadon 2 is really looking like it will be a very detailed game to play and a desirable title for RPG fans looking for a deep and meaningful adventure to engage themselves within. If there were one negative that I would point out at this point in development, it is that there is a lot of reading to do. I know this is not an uncommon feature in such games, and maybe this is a more personal factor than a genuine problem requiring a fix, but I recognise that some gamers are like myself and do not wish to have to read too much while they play. I personally prefer speech to text, but in a game of this style I can see why text might have been the preferred choice of the developers. As a whole the game seems to have a lot to offer to RPG fans and it will be interesting for them to see what they think once it reaches its final release.

The Good – A deep storyline and an adventure which never makes you feel too far disconnected from the wider world and overarching task at hand. A short but sweet tutorial also acts as the perfect refresher for players of Avadon and a strong first-time guide to new players alike.

The Bad – Some players may not be too fond of the amount of text to read in game.

Avadon 2 - Preview @ Gizorama

by Couchpotato, Friday - October 04, 2013 00:39

A site that goes by the name Gizorama has a new preview of Avadon 2: The Corruption.

Avadon 2: The Corruption does nothing blatantly wrong. It does not fail on a technical or conceptual level, nor does it thrive in either aspect. While this game can serve as a good bit of nostalgia for any turn based RPG fans, is really doesn’t do anything new.  If you enter into a game with the expectation of getting a brand new experience with innovative elements, this is absolutely not for you. However, if you seek a blast from the past that injects a fresh, albeit slightly derivative, story and an awesome class (Tinkermage) than by all means, buy this game when it is released.

Avadon 2 - Preview @ Leviathyn

by Couchpotato, Tuesday - October 01, 2013 00:55

Leviathyn has posted a new preview of Spiderweb Software's next game Avadon 2.

Avadon 2 follows on directly from the main plot in Avadon (assuming that you didn’t try anything funny!). The main difference is that you start as a lowly scout in the midst of a rebellion instead of an almighty and unquestioned Hand of Avadon. Instead of a feeling of power you have to deal with danger and authority, which is an altogether different kind of thrilling. While your status changes throughout the game, the main storyline focuses on how Avadon clings to it’s former authority and power to try to keep the Pact safe despite the damage it sustained during the last game.

Overall, there really aren’t that many changes in the Avadon sequel, but all of them are positive ones. If you loved Avadon: The Black Fortress, you’ll most likely love this new addition of fantasy goodness. This also means that anything that annoyed you is still in there – a lot of the core mechanics like the UI and inventory system are all the same.

Avadon 2 - Beta Preview @ IndieRPGs

by Couchpotato, Thursday - September 12, 2013 01:07

IndieRPGs previews the beta version of Avadon 2 in a new gameplay video.

In my Youtube account, I come bearing a new video: IndieRPGs.com Checks Out Avadon 2! Specifically, we’ll be looking at an early version of the Windows port of the game. It’s still in beta, but this should give us a peek at what we’re in for:

Jeff Vogel has been making these sorts of games for a long time, and it shows. He’s gotten this thing down to a science. There isn’t much to critique here that can’t be chalked up to the limitations of an introductory sequence (after all, a measure of linearity is necessary if you’re going to teach the player basic skills for play in the right order).
