The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order - First Look at Caves

by Silver, Friday - April 03, 2020 21:04

The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order explains its take on caves and cave systems. Screenshots at the link.

A Showing of natural cave system that has been around for centuries, with only mild human modification and tunneling done in that time.

Welcome Back, I must tell you all the tale of the caves. A natural cave system that has been around for centuries, with only mild human modification and tunneling done in that time. During the time of Althas this cave systems houses a variety of people that regularly change. One may find brigands who move north and south along the feet of the mountains outside of the Thenodar patrols. Or you may find a group of refugees, slaves and prisoners escaped from Somstrynd Clan camps. Or one may even find wildlife like bears and wolves. This is one of the ways we want to keep out game world lively and full of diversity. As each of these different resident types presents a new threat or potentially a new side-quest or mission for you to do. While we continue to work on the game we plan to have multiple caves for our Prelude release, meaning many different possibilities of unknowns as some cave may have these features.

The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order - Landscape Texture Improvements

by Silver, Sunday - February 16, 2020 22:26

The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order has a new update about landscape texture improvements.

Talking to our “Environment Artist” Kevin Eriksen about the new created shaders for the game.

Posted by gsyoung on

Hello there, “Kept you waiting huh?” like a certain stealth game, we were missing for a while. Although we never stopped working, as in this year we gear up get even more done. We apologize for being gone so long, there was just a lot of shuffling and reorganizing behind the scene that needed to be done. One of the projects was an overhaul to the shaders used in the game.

2

This is just a test map but I got to talk our “Environment Artist” Kevin Eriksen created the shaders he stated “I created the old shader 3 or so years ago, and it just doesn't live up to modern standards of performance and graphical fidelity. This time around I've focused a lot more on the looks and the underlying mechanics, resulting in a far more robust material with more than double the performance gain.

3

When also asked a simplified explanation he said If we compare the looks of the landscape to a car, the shader would be the parts under the hood making the car run , So old material = ugly old car that runs bad.” Well I guess from the photos our “car” is running like new!

The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order - Music of Althas

by Silver, Tuesday - July 30, 2019 09:50

A new update for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order called Music of Althas.

Music of Althas

Hello, we're back with another update for you, this time giving you a look at the music for Althas. We've had our new composer, Arvin Fekri, working on crafting a distinct sound for Althas and he's created some great pieces.

First we have a general theme for Althas overall, currently planned as the main theme for the overall Althas project.

Next up is a theme for Thenodar specifically, the first region of Althas we are developing. As a region divided between more urbanized lowlands and a more rustic, traditional highland, we wanted to have a blend of instruments that helped represent these two sides to the region's culture.

Next we have a track crafted for towns, specifically Bordrima. This song and ones like it will play in towns and villages outside the three major cities of Thingstów, Arísan, and Múthrand. We'll also leave you with a small snippet of work in progress music, as a taste of what's to come.

You can find more of Arvin's work over at his SoundCloud: M.soundcloud.com

Hope you've enjoyed this peek at the music side of things, stay tuned for more updates about Althas in the weeks to come.

The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order - New Updates

by Silver, Monday - July 08, 2019 09:31

Some updates for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order revisit Bordrima and explore the domesticated creatures of Althas.

...

These next three images not only feature many new small details added throughout the town, but also prominently feature the ruins of the ancient city of Randell, the crumbling citadel of which overlooks the current town. The ruins have served as a place of refuge at times, periodically fortified with temporary wooden structures, but it has been a long time since that has been needed. The ruins of the great bridge, which once saw traffic as the main route into the city from the couth, have been used as the foundations for the humble wooden bridge, now rarely traveled. Randell is another place that will be prominently featured in a future update.

Our designers have also been busy in adding lots of details to spice up some old areas. In the first image, some small details help flesh out the area outside the general store, while in the second gives a previously empty space a lived in feeling while also giving you just a glimpse of the expansive and redone Faesholt Forest, which we will be diving deeper into soon.

That’s it for this update. There will be a variety to come in the coming weeks and months, so stay tuned.
