Regalia - Paragons and Pajamas DLC

by Silver, Sunday - June 10, 2018 13:20

The Paragons and Pajamas DLC for Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs is now available.

About This Content

Get in touch with the yet unknown parts of Rashytil! So far you've only heard about Minwe and Armelisse, but now you can get into a proper fight with them and... tell them off in a nasty letter.

Paragons and Pajamas brings two new factions to the diplomatic table. That means two new playable heroes (well, three in fact...), new personal bonds, and more voice acting!

Quinn is a royal bodyguard form Armelisse and she's not afraid to bring the pain on her enemies. As a melee specialist, she can not only dish out terrible damage but also withstand blows that would make a lesser warrior yield.

Yusuf, however, is possessed by an evil djinn - which is a perfectly ordinary thing, so please don't stare. During battle the duo changes their fighting style depending on Yusuf's state of mind, so think on your toes!

The Paragons and Pajamas DLC comes with:

  • New, brave party member - Quinn
  • New, sleepy and evil party members, Yusuf and Berius respectively
  • Two new personal bonds to forge
  • Two new factions, ready to exchange insults with your kingdom (including new missives to write and decisions to make)
  • New items to be crafted

Regalia - Review @ Bleeding Cool

by Hiddenx, Monday - July 10, 2017 19:15

Bleeding Cool reviewed Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs:

Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs Is Quirky, Good Fun

Klabater and Pixelated Milk’s RPG, Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs has received mostly positive reviews since its release on Steam back in May and it has absolutely deserved them. Regalia is an absolutely charming turn-based RPG adventure game, which manages to pay homage to the usual tropes while also poking some fun at itself. In Regalia: of Men and Monarchs, you are tasked with investigating your family’s ruin, and bringing your town back to life. But don’t let that fool you into thinking this is a tower defense game.

[...]

Regalia: of Men and Monarchs is a throwback game in the best sense of throwbacks. It isn’t a mindless attempt to ape an older style for profit, and it isn’t a trumped up remaster, it takes all the best moments of older RPGs as well as their low points, and sends them up with clear affection. When a vampire trots out a silly accent, the game’s protagonists usually respond with faces of disdain, and in doing so, Pixelated Milk invites us to share in the joke. And that might just be the best thing about it.

Score: 9/10

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs Review

It has been a while since I’ve played a game that was intentionally funny, and not just ironically funny. Humour is subjective and, in my opinion, insanely hard to pull of in video games. Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs is a surprising little gem that not only succeeds in being funny, but also in being a well-made rpg experience. There is no shortage of content, difficult gameplay, and jokes in this Kickstarter-funded title. So let’s dive into a sea of never ending debt – that is the actual plot of the game.

Regalia - Review @ COG

COG has reviewed Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs:

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs Review – A Cornucopia of Brilliant and Wonderfully Executed Ideas

Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs Review

As a lover of tactical roleplaying games, I was excited to jump into Regalia. It boasts of having everything I want: a long questline, intense combat, a relationship building system with your party, and funny dialogue. But how will it stand against the goliaths of Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy?

Regalia starts on the happy note with the death of Kay’s father. Kay then learns that he is now the rightful ruler of Ascalia, a faraway kingdom which has apparently seen much better times. Teaming up with his two sisters and his personal bodyguard, he sets off to find his new kingdom and do whatever it is kings do. Kay soon finds out that he not only inherited the kingdom, but also all his predecessors’ debt. To appease the taxman, Kay must gradually rebuild the kingdom and chip away at the enormous amount of debt that has built up; which is something I sadly can relate to.

[...]

All in all, I found Regalia to be much more fun than I had anticipated. Whenever I hear the phrase ‘Funded by Kickstarter’ I do tend to second guess my purchase, but after seeing how Pixelated Milk intended to spend their money, I was completely reassured. The end-product of this was engrossing and an absolute blast to play. The few negatives I found were a nuisance to play with, but it didn’t detract much from the experience, and with the introduction of New Game+ I’ll definitely be hopping back into check on my Kingdom throughout the week.

The Good

  • Likeable and distinctive characters
  • Good music & voice acting
  • Does a good job at storytelling
  • Challenging battles

The Bad

  • Slow start
  • Lots of cut scenes that breaks up the fun

Score: 79/100

Regalia - Review Roundup

by Myrthos, Tuesday - May 23, 2017 12:27

Here are a couple of reviews for Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs.

PopGeeks, positive

Even the more over-the-top moments, like Monty Python references or a blacksmith character with a tiny tutu-wearing dog, hold back just enough to keep things charming rather than exhausting. It also helps that the storyline is comparatively prosaic: instead of the usual “chosen one destined to save the world,” Regalia focuses on a young royal family attempting to rebuild their decaying kingdom and pay back their family debts. Regalia is in beta, and the developers are still working diligently to fix a few final bugs, but based on what they’ve accomplished so far, this could be one of the best indie RPGs of the year.

OnRPG, 4/5

All in all, Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs is a true gem of the indie scene. Easily the most fun tactics game I’ve picked up in the past year, and at a fraction of the price of what the big shot developers would charge for such a masterpiece. The narrative, world building, character personalities, combat mechanics, and RPG progression system all come together in such a neatly woven fabric that it pains me knowing how little attention the game has received leading up to launch.

MMOExaminer, positive

Despite its initial simplicity, Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs has everything to please those looking for a unique strategy-like JRPG-based monarch simulator. The game has beautiful graphics, a fitting soundtrack with some beautiful moments, and a lot more intricate systems that are surprisingly easy enough to understand. Its pace is perfect for chill play sessions and the characters are so charming and funny that it’s hard not to fall for each and every one of them.

Brash Games, 7/10

Overall, Regalia is good at what it does and, in my eyes, the developers have certainly delivered a solid product, not only to the Kickstarter backers, but those who were looking for something new in the genre. While the game has a rather slow start, once things pick up, you’ll most likely find yourself enjoying it a little more. Still, the game has its flaws, and it certainly shows, and it’s most certainly not a game for everyone. It doesn’t exactly have a really captivating storyline but I found the combat, the time management stuff and the dialogue to provide a nice little mix from which I can take a lot of fun. In the end, you’re most likely looking at about 30 hours of gameplay which may or may not be your cup of tea.

DVS Gaming, 9/10

This isn't just a game made with love, it's a refined game of love. I don't always look on the bright side of games, but it's been awhile since a game made me this happy. It's not perfect, but there's a lot to enjoy. Thanks to the mix of Strategy, Town Building, and CYOA elements, you won't need to worry about the game losing steam. I will definitely play more of this after I write this review.

Gamespew, 8/10

There are some negatives, mostly with the combat sections. They do tend to last for an awfully long time, even on the fastest setting, and the camera placement can be rather annoying and stiff. Overall though, these negatives are not enough to take away from the enjoyment that Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs gave me. It’s a safe bet for anyone looking to scratch an old tactical JRPG itch. It may not reinvent any part of the wheel, but it reconstructs it in a way that is quite admirable.

Regalia - Review @ WCCFtech

by Hiddenx, Saturday - May 20, 2017 08:55

WCCFtech has reviewed the crowdfunded J-RPG Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs:

Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs Review – Reclaiming What Was Lost

Following the days of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, tactical role-playing games have been out of the spotlight, with only a few games, like the latest Fire Emblem games and The Banner Saga, managing to get some well-deserved recognition. Traditional Japanese role-playing games haven’t had it easy as well, with only big games like Final Fantasy XV and the recently released Persona 5 getting recognition. With the genre as a whole struggling a bit, at least compared to 15/20 years ago, would the situation change if one was to take the best features of both tactical and traditional JRPG and mix them together while adding elements of other types of strategy games?  We cannot know for sure know, but we did get a game like Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs, a fun role playing game that manages to properly tribute JRPGs despite being derivative.

[...]

Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs does quite well what it sets out to do, tributing classic JRPGs by mixing a variety of features and mechanics. While not overly original, the game developed by Pixelated Milk manages to be quite entertaining thanks to the charming characters, lighthearted tone, and challenging battles. If you loved JRPGs back in the 90s, early 2000s, you will find plenty to like in Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs.

Regalia - Preview @ TechRaptor

by Hiddenx, Tuesday - March 21, 2017 01:17

TechRaptor has checked out the tactical RPG Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs:

Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs Preview – The Pauper Prince

Regalia: Of Men And Monarchs is an isometric RPG from developer Pixelated Milk that combines a tactical turn-based battle system with town building mechanics. The game places an emphasis on character relationships and narrative, with dialogue infused with python-esque humor to be found throughout. I’ve been going hands-on with the beta build of the game to get an idea of what this quirky title has to offer. This preview version offers only a small slice of the game and is obviously a work in progress. Still, what I’ve played so far has me intrigued and more than willing to go back for more.

[...]

The only problem I had with the numerous dialogue scenes (both main story related and otherwise) is that the auto-play option for conversations is severely glitchy at this time. At various different times, this either forced me to click through conversations to proceed, rushed through half-spoken lines of dialogue on its own, turned itself on and off, and on one occasion refused to let me proceed in a conversation without toggling it on and off for every line of dialogue. It seems like an issue that should be resolved for the final release but I mention it here because it drove me truly insane.

That’s about as much as I can say at the moment, without being able to delve further into both the tactical combat and the town and relationship building, it’s hard to say whether these systems will retain enough depth to be interesting across a game the developer states will take over 30 hours of playtime. What’s been presented so far shows a lot of promise, though, and I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs when it releases on April 27th.

Regalia - Development Update #9

by Hiddenx, Sunday - April 24, 2016 16:53

The development update #9 for Regalia - Of Men And Monarchs:

Hello backers!

Welcome to the first update of Spring 2016! With the snows finally gone and temperatures steadily increasing, we're ready to optimistically share with you the content of the ninth Development Update.

Beta! When?!

We still need a liiiittle more time. The whole team is crunching HARD to deliver you a satisfying beta experience that is as enjoyable as possible. We have finished almost all content and production planned for the vertical slice. Now it's time for some extensive in-house testing and minor polishing (it's a beta after all); as soon as that's done, we'll share the build with you. Stay tuned!

More footage

To follow up on the screenshots from various dialogue scenes from last month, we've thought it would be nice to share a quick look at how they look in motion, complete with voice acting, dialogue animations, emoticons, sounds and music. Here's a very brief, spoiler free cutscene we've selected for this task:

loading...

We still have more things planned for the cutscenes, like character portraits changing based on their emotions, more physics-driven animations (similar to Kay's flowing cloak) and general polish. This is however a good base we will be using for the backer beta.
