Can you talk to us a bit about how combat is structured in Eternity: The Last Unicorn?

We created the combat to be challenging but not too complex. The enemies are divided into different classes like Healer, Berserker or Mage, so you will find different groups of enemies strategically positioned to make combat more interesting. And if you just smash the button you will probably get killed sooner or later.

You can find new weapons and abilities during the gameplay which also brings some changes to the system. For example some enemies have a barrier that can only be broken by magic weapons (as is the case of your bow).

The enemies will become more dangerous as you advance in gameplay, so it’s important to use some of your time leveling and preparing for what’s to come.

How much of an emphasis on exploration can players expect to see?

There is a good amount of exploration during the gameplay, you will find new places and important treasures hiding in the Kingdom. Some of these places you can only find after getting a specific skill or weapon. It’s up to the player if he wants to explore or not but definitely those who explore will find great rewards.

Video games have been on a bit of a Viking kick recently. God of War, The Banner Saga, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and more have tapped into those heavy-metal album cover Nordic vibes, and why not? Who doesn’t enjoy cleaving a frost giant’s head in two with a battle axe? Eternity: The Last Unicorn, a new action-RPG from Brazilian developer Void Studios, is the latest game to go to the Norse mythology well.

Actually, Eternity: The Last Unicorn has a number of influences. Yes, it does the Viking thing, but it’s also inspired by PS1-era fixed-camera classics and modern hardcore action-RPGs like Dark Souls. Needless to say, the game is a bit of a mishmash, but is the combination just crazy enough to work? Is Eternity: The Last Unicorn action-RPG Valhalla or will it pillage your patience? Eternity: The Last Unicorn is a less-than-magical mix of misplaced PS1-era nostalgia and shallow Dark Souls mimicry. Nearly everything about the game, from its fixed camera angles, to its clunky combat, to its copious backtracking is broken or irritating in some way. If challenge is all you’re looking for in a game, perhaps Eternity: The Last Unicorn is for you. Everyone else will likely find it as fun as a sharpened horn to the eye.

Eternity- The Last Unicorn Review (PC) :: Outdated In Almost Every Aspect

It’s no secret in the back alleys of Indian video game press that I’m a sucker for oldschool RPGs. I stopped counting the times I’ve gone out of my way to look for any more of this recently resurged sub-genre. The market might be getting a little saturated with all the retro RPGs out there these days, but that doesn’t dissuade me from trying out every single one of these, the latest in the line of which, is Eternity- The Last Unicorn. Let’s see how it is, shall we?

Eternity- The Last Unicorn is a classic RPG  (according to the Steam store) developed by Void Studios and published by 1C Entertainment. The game was released on PC and PS4 on March 5, 2019.

Story & Narrative
I’ve played RPGs based on Norse mythology and those based off High-Fantasy. But it’s not every day that I get the chance to play an RPG that describes it to be a unique blend of the two. The story of Eternity takes place through the point of view of two characters, one representing each of the aforementioned setting. The first is an Elven maiden Aurehen who is searching for ways to restore the lost power of the bewitched Unicorns, whose fantastical abilities fueled the immortality of the Elven race. The second playable character is Bior, is a Viking warrior whose party of warriors befell a terrible fate. The game switches between two characters at pre-determined intervals to move the story forward.

VERDICT
Eternity: The Last Unicorn could have been a guilty pleasure game if it had a flexible camera, reliable combat and more options to develop your character. It would have fared better off as an isometric RPG or one akin to Legend of Grimrock. However, that is clearly not the case. As of now, Eternity is a frustrating mess that is hard to recommend, even with the cheap (regional) price tag.

The third game I saw at the 1C booth was Eternity: The Last Unicorn, which is an action-RPG coming from Brazil, but I found the RPG elements to be a bit thin.

Eternity: The Last Unicorn is labeled as an action RPG, based on Norse Mythology. It has two playable characters. The first is a female elf, who is the fastest of the two, using a sword and a bow. The other is a male viking warrior, who is strong, but slower and likes to use a sword and a shield or a two-handed sword. Both characters are needed in order to play the game from a certain point onwards. There are parts where you need to play with viking or the elf, but for the rest of the game you can choose who to play with.
