RPGWatch Feature - Battle Chasers: Nightwar Review

by Myrthos, Tuesday - October 02, 2018 12:43

Forgottenlor checks out Battle Chasers: Nightwar to find out if the beautiful animated game is also a beautiful game.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an interesting marriage of an obscure fantasy comic book with the sort of gameplay one sees in early Final Fantasy games. Since JRPGsand comics are character driven, it seems at first glance to be a good fit. Battle Chasers disposes of the anime style art and child like characters of Japanese RPGsin favor of a hand drawn and painted comic book style which appeals to players like me, who play JRPGsdespite their art direction. And even though the game has procedural dungeons, crafting, and random loot, it is in many ways a nostalgic game.

I've never been one to put all too much value on presentation, but Battle Chasers really stands out here. Whether one finds the comic book style appealing or not, its well executed. The characters run across beautifully hand painted backgrounds. Story segments are presented in scenes that actually look like they could come from the pages of comic book, and both the character models and monsters are skillfully brought to life. Also the animations are dramatic and memorable. Even after you've seen Gully's quakefist or Red Monika's assassination attacks 100 times, they still look good. The game's cut scenes also look like frames of a comic book. Since World of Warcraft we've seen a lot of comic style art, but few games actually seem to even come close to the quality of artwork of a modern comic book or graphic novel. Battlechasers presents some of the best comic book style art I've seen in a computer game.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Review @Gaming Trend

by Silver, Tuesday - May 15, 2018 03:56

Gaming Trend reviewed Battle Chasers: Nightwar.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Battle Chasers, both in game and comic form. While I was excited to sing the praises of the Battle Chasers: Nightwar PC release in October of last year, I did so while harboring a no small bit of disappointment that the Switch release was beyond my grasp. Fans waited eagerly month after month slipped away without the announcement of a Switch release date, like evenings spent by the fireside at the Harm’s Way Inn. The wait is finally over and, at last, Battle Chasers: Nightwar has arrived on the Switch… and it is glorious.

One of my biggest gripes about the original release was how much grinding was necessary, especially early on. I generally don’t mind grinding; I actually quite enjoy the occasional battle-binge in order to power up my crew, but I felt this game initially took it a bit too far. After defeating a dungeon, I’d head back to town to heal up, then, instead of heading to the next story point, I’d immediately head right back to that same dungeon and beat it again, maybe even twice more, just so I could be strong enough to survive wherever I was supposed to head next. Replaying dungeons may be an important and valuable part of the game, but I felt that the constant need to immediately backtrack disrupted the flow of the game and story.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Review @ GiN

by Hiddenx, Monday - April 09, 2018 21:01

GiN reviewed the J-RPG Battle Chasers: Nightwar:

Chasing Old School JRPG Greats with Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Hey all I’m back with a review for a game that that harkens back to the good old days of turn based JRPGs! It’s Battle Chasers: Nightwar! Now, this one is headed straight for the Nintendo Switch in a couple weeks, but for now, our play was with the PlayStation 4 version, which we assume will be little different from the pending Switch serving for gamers.
Plot Synopsis: A girl named Gully has taken a pair of magic gauntlets, along with a motley crew consisting of a sellsword, a wizard, a swashbuckling bounty huntress, and a kindly robot, on a journey to find her missing father. The crew gets shot down from their airship over a mysterious island with serious problems of its own. Supposedly, the island is home to a motherlode of mana, which has prompted something of a magic-based gold rush.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Review @ RPG Site

RPG Site has reviewed Battle Chasers: Nightwar:

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Review

2017 was a pretty great year for RPG fans and fans of video games in general. Everyone's aware of that by this point. We all happily lived through it, trying to squeeze in all of the new entries to our favorite series such as Persona 5, new IPs like Horizon: Zero Dawn, and new takes on old staples like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Most of us will still be playing catch-up throughout the early part of this year as we try to finish up our playthroughs of these often lengthy games. Needless to say, I don't think most of us had enough time to get to everything that we wanted to last year.

loading...

[...]

Outside of the unorthodox pairing of gameplay and presentation, Battle Chasers: Nightwar isn't that remarkable of a game on paper. Many of the mechanics are largely borrowed from other games and the narrative merely exists to move the party from one dungeon to the next -- practical but not altogether captivating. That stated, Nightwar is a game that ends up slightly more than the sum of its components, partially due to the novelty of the package as a whole, and (admittedly) somewhat due to the nostalgia of the turn-based rpg at its core.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Review @ Niche Gamer

by Hiddenx, Tuesday - December 12, 2017 21:36

Niche Gamer reviewed the J-RPG Battle Chasers: Nightwar:

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Review – Chasing Greatness

To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of Battle Chasers before this game was announced. Starting in the late 90s, the comic—written and penciled by Joe Madureira—managed to slip under the radar for me. However, enough people seem to have remembered the series fondly, as a 30-day Kickstarter for the game managed to reach its funding goal. The development studio behind this title, Airship Syndicate, were the co-founders of the now-defunct Vigil Games, makers of Darksiders 1 & 2. The question is, how well-utilized were the funds of Battle Chasers: Nightwar‘s Kickstarter backers?
[...]
Another black mark on Battle Chasers: Nightwar, albeit a console-specific one, is the performance. I experienced occasional slowdown and major loading times on the PS4 version of this game. I remember once waiting an entire minute for a battle to load, and the Tolkas Arena [which is timed, no less] had the next wave of enemies delayed by about ten seconds on some occasions. I’ve gotten reports that the PC has none of these issues, so play on there!

At the end of the day, Battle Chasers, despite all my grumbling about it, is truly an enjoyable game. Between the main dungeon content and side quests (like the arena and the occasional monster hunt), there’s plenty of stuff to do, and it’s mostly a fun romp throughout. Some failings here and there make it fall just shy of being great, but if the sequel-bait ending is anything to go by, we’ll be seeing more of this series in the future.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar was reviewed on PS4 using a review copy provided by THQ Nordic. You can find additional information about Niche Gamer’s review/ethics policy here.

The Verdict: 7.5

The Good:

  • Truly impressive visuals throughout
  • Plenty of stuff to do
  • Excellent combat system
  • Great soundtrack and voice acting

The Bad:

  • Barebones story, almost zero character development
  • Lategame combat is tedious, leveling is a grind
  • Loot drops are disappointing
  • Bad performance on PS4

PS: Battle Chasers: Nightwar is on a sale this week on Steam, -33%.

Thank you for the info Aubrielle!

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - New Patch

by Silver, Wednesday - October 18, 2017 04:10

The latest patch for Battle Chasers: Nightwar makes the game less grindy.

******UPDATE - The Patch is now live on Steam, GOG and PS4. You can check to make sure you have the latest version if you check the top right on the title screen. It should read v.23098  ***

Hey Everyone!

We've gotten some great feedback since launch and have a bunch of bug fixes and balance/quality of life things in this patch that we hope improves everyone's experience. One common point of feedback was involving grinding near the mid/late game, as well a big decrease in difficulty when certain perks/weapons and combos were acquired. These are all addressed in this patch. NG+ should also be a lot more challenging now! This is now live on steam for PC and Mac and we are working on pushing to GOG as we speak.

Consoles: Our #1 focus right now is fixing the crashes and potential save corruption that players are encountering on PS4. We hope to have a fix soon, and when the fix goes live, these balance tweaks will be included as well. Xbox One will also see these changes at that time.

Without Further Ado!

Patch Notes:

  • The Blacksmith found a bunch of gold in his old apron: Cost to upgrade the Blacksmith has been reduced to 500g for the first upgrade and 2000g for the final upgrade.
  • Vendors became a little less greedy and you can sell items to vendors for slightly more.
  • Fishing comparison display is fixed. We figured actually seeing accurate numbers was a good idea.
  • Perks should always unlock at level 6. If they didn't unlock for you, you should see them unlocked with this patch now.
  • Getting into combat while interacting with the Surveyor should no longer make you unable to interact with anything when returning from combat
  • The name/description for the items required for Gully's Ultimate weapon were flipped (Dragon Scales and Dragon Heart Phylactery)
  • Smoothed XP curve for mid to late game to require less replay of dungeons to level up
  • A wider variety of items will be available as loot in chests, especially in early/mid game dungeons when crafting isn't as accessible
  • Increased gold acquired from creatures, chests, boxes/crates. Also, fixed a bug where minor loot objects (crates, barrels, jars etc) were giving too little gold outside of the first dungeon and Strongmont.
  • Various typo fixes
  • Enchanting Shrine will be guaranteed to spawn in Path of Fangs and Deadwatch.
  • Fix for a bug some people were encountering in which some of the Hunt bosses (sludge mound and king slime) never spawned and players became stuck
  • The room containing The Shade of Belevros in the Iron Outpost should spawn a loooooot more now.
  • Fixed a bug in which Alumon would actually NOT join the party. We found him and forced him back in your party if he wasn't unlocked for you, and he should be appropriately leveled and not naked
  • Lycelot Alpha Trackers realized they should sometimes whiff their Claw Barrage attack and players will be able to evade its strikes now like any other attack. Also damage of it reduced slightly.
  • Fixed missing name/description for starting weapons for Knolan and Red Monika in New Game Plus.
  • Fixed an error in 2 of Alumon's perks (Dark Mending II and Sanguine Embrace II) adding 2x the healing they should have (sneaky Alumon)
  • Increased the base level of enemies in NG+
  • Enemies around the Dig on the worldmap will be appropriately leveled
  • You should be able to turn in the Vessel of War and Glorious Vessel of War now if it was stuck for you (you will need to re-kill 10 enemies on your way back to the shrine where you turn it in though)
  • Mantle of Aramus has been changed: Places a damage shield on Gully that absorbs damage. For the next 3 turns, anytime Gully receives damage, she will be healed.
  • Clarification with the Defend II perk on Gully that specifies that the damage reduction is only when using Defend
  • Stun Immunity duration increased to 4 turns from 3 turns after a hero or enemy is stunned.
  • Re-Balanced Crit Damage perks
  • Fixed a bug with the Ring of Lost Love's thorns value
  • Each Heroes' Legendary Weapon power has been reduced slightly (still the best weapons in the game!) This fix isn't retroactive, so if you already have the legendary weapons in that run, they will remain extra crazy.
  • The final boss has grown in power
  • Masteries have been rebalanced across the board
  • Perks/masteries that power up based on overcharge use have been rebalanced
  • Some of the Pirate Captains weren't spawning, but should now spawn normally
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused players to be stuck on the victory screen (especially against Lycelot Bombers)
  • Some bosses will keep a tighter hold of their purses, not letting you pickpocket key items from them
  • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused heroes who gained multiple levels at once to not receive all the perk points they should have. If you've been effected by this, you may notice some of your heroes have more perk points than they did before!
  • Fixed a bug that prevented unpurchased hero skins from showing up in NG+
  • Opening the Bestiary in combat with a controller sometimes caused it to auto close. This has been fixed. Using B(on xbox controller) or O(on playstation controller) will close it. (keyboard always worked and hasn't been changed)
  • Fixed a Bug in which you can get infinite xp from the king slime. We think that's a little too much xp.
  • Arena rewards were sometimes not being awarded. This has been fixed and if you have been affected by it in the past, when you complete another arena run, any unique items that you should have been awarded and didn't receive will be given to you. (this means if you had been robbed of something that you could've gotten somewhere else like a flask, and you actually got it somewhere else, it won't be given, but key items like weapons, trinkets, recipes, quest items etc will always be retroactively given)
  • The boss of Deadwatch was incorrectly leveled in NG+ on Mythic Difficulty.

Thank you!

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Impressions @ TechRaptor

TechRaptor checked out Battle Chasers: Nightwar:

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Impressions – Slave To The Grind

When it comes to character design, Joe Madureira can do no wrong. His chunky skull-encrusted warriors are a feast for the eyes, and that feast is what grabbed me about Battle Chasers: Nightwar. Based on the hit 90s Wildstorm comic, this Kickstarted turn-based JRPG brings the style in spades. The five heroes you may or may not remember depending on your age bracket crash-land on an island and quickly find themselves embroiled in the plot of an evil necromancer and her army of wolfmen. Playing out as a very traditional JRPG, there are repeatable dungeons, a weapon crafting system, and even a few secret bosses. Over the course of the game’s long running time, players will have a lot of turn-based combat to enjoy. In many ways, this is exactly what the original backers of the game wanted, which makes Battle Chasers: Nightwar both a boon for hardcore fans and a hard sell for many others.

[...]

In the end, I found Battle Chasers: Nightwar to be a great game for a very specific group of people that I happen to be outside of. If you’re all in for hours and hours of working through rats and slimes to get to the good stuff, then there’s a lot to love. The game is generous with varied loot drops and has a pair of full crafting systems to dive into. If you’re bored of dungeon crawling, you can challenge yourself in arena battles or seek out some minimal alternate activities. However, the keyword is minimal, and the game just doesn’t have enough variety in its side content to justify the walls constantly being thrown at players who’d rather only experience a dungeon once.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Interview

by Silver, Wednesday - October 11, 2017 11:43

PCGamer interview the developers of Battle Chasers: Nightwar about what inspired them to make their game and the story of its creation.

...

Dangerous game

Battle Chasers: Nightwar launched almost exactly two years after the Kickstarter campaign, which was one year after the initial delivery date. "To be fair, the game is about three times bigger than what we originally proposed, and our team had to grow," says Joe. He had nothing but praise for their patient and supportive Kickstarter community: "We did our updates. They knew we were still working on it. No one really complained."

The alpha for Battle Chasers: Nightwar began last spring for select high-tier Kickstarter backers, and the beta launched a few weeks ago, open to all of them. "We had a lot of feedback, bug fixes, and balance changes thanks to our alpha and beta," says Steve. He specifically points to an increase in run speed in dungeons as a highly requested change based on feedback.

In addition to feedback from forum posts, indie developers can now watch players stream their unfinished game as a form of live quality assurance. Most of the problems Airship Syndicate saw players encounter were due to a lack of communication. "We didn't have any description of what the stats actually did in our in-game manual," says Steve. "People weren't realizing that 'attack power' also affected shields and healing, in addition to damage. It was also a lot of little things, like watching players get lost in a darkened area, or not seeing certain objects."

They added a few more tutorials, but were hesitant to hold players' hands too much. "We tried to make our tutorials as unobtrusive as possible," says Steve. He singles out Persona 5, one of his favorite games, as an example of what they wanted to avoid. "In a [Persona] dungeon there'll be a cool puzzle, but the characters just tell you the solution. That would have been fun to figure out! 70 hours in and they're still holding my hand."

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is selling well, so are we seeing the beginning of a series? "I had way more fun working with the Battle Chasers characters than I thought I would," says Joe. "I joke that I want to make a sequel where the town NPCs are the heroes. They're all really badass! Why do they need these adventurers anyway?"

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Preview @ COG

COG thinks Battle Chasers: Nightwar could be the sleeper hit of the year:

E3 2017: Battle Chasers: Nightwar Preview – JRPG Sleeper Hit of the Year

Battle Chasers: Nightwar preps for its final release…

Way back at E3 2016 I had the privilege of sitting down with comic book artist/writer and legend Joe Madureira for a first look at Airship Syndicate’s, Battle Chasers: Nightwar. Funded on Kickstarter to the tune of over $850K, Battle Chasers is on the home stretch as it nears its October 3rd release on Steam, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. A lot of work has been done in the year since I first sat down with Joe and I was extremely excited to sit with him once again at E3 2017 to take a look at the near-final version of the game.

loading...

Featuring fully voiced characters pulled from Joe Madureira’s cult favorite Battle Chasers comic book the upcoming turn-based RPG stands on its own from its written counterpart. Joe was quick to point out that fans both well versed in the comics and those brand new to the universe would have no problems jumping into the game. Superbly animated, drenched with style and promising hardcore, strategic turn-based action it should keep any RPG fan fully invested in its world. I’ll readily admit that I’m somewhat of a superfan of Joe and his work so my enthusiasm might be a bit higher than the average fan but I’ll also say unequivocally that Battle Chasers: Nightwar has enough meat to stand on its own against its peers in the turn-based RPG genre. As I said last year, if you’re a fan of old school games like Chrono Trigger or newer entries into the genre such as I Am Setsuna, then you should be proper excited for what Airship Syndicate has in store.

Farflame spotted a Battle Chasers: Nightwar preview on Thumb Culture:

Battle Chasers: Nightwar – PC Preview

A fun isometric role playing game with turn based combat and an in depth crafting system. Classic combat featured in a technology infused fantasy land, is Battle Chasers: Nightwar everything that it promises to be?

Battle Chasers: Nightwar was originally funded by a kick starter project back in 2015 and is now available on Steam Early Access. The game is being made by Airship Syndicate, a company located in Austin Texas. Being a staff pick on Kickstarter and funding over $850,000 which was over $300,000 more than they needed, the games prospects are strong.

Gameplay

Having invested a couple of hours into the game, all I can say is that I wanted MORE! Inspired by classic JRPGs is clear from playing the game but the developers have only been inspired, everything is fresh, clean and crisp in terms of gameplay and mechanics and even after a couple of hours, I wanted to get even more into the game.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Joe Madureira Interview

by Silver, Friday - November 11, 2016 02:19

Joe Madureira shares his thoughts on Battle Chasers: Nightwar with PCGamesN. According to Joe the game is looking good and offers a western take on the usual JRPG formula.

The influences have come full circle. Now, instead of a comic full of JRPG flavour, it's a JRPG with graphic novel seasoning. For example, panels featuring Madureira's art display during certain combat moves, making the battle system feel like a hybrid of comic action sequences and videogames.

Madureira feels passionate about making a Western JRPG. "Why aren't people in the states making these games?" he asks. "There's a lot of love for these old games but there aren't many studios that are willing to do it, so we kind of took it upon ourselves to do something."

Outside the classically orchestrated combat though, Airship Syndicate are looking to make Nightwar a little different from traditional JRPGs. "We have randomly generated dungeons, we have randomly generated loot, and the dungeons are more action-based," notes Madureira, citing Diablo as a point of reference.

Interactive stories vs linear narrative

Changing the Battle Chasers universe from a linear comic narrative to an interactive adventure game has been quite the challenge for Airship Syndicate. "It's more open-ended. We want people to replay dungeons and try different things, and that breaks the linear narrative of a comic book," Madureira explains.

"It's hard finding the balance," he says. "Darksiders was definitely a little more linear. It had cinematic moments that were presented in a linear fashion and it was a little easier to tell a robust story there. But with Battle Chasers we're keeping it a little more high level."

Battle Chasers fans will discover that the narrative unfolds in a way they're not used to. Now they'll be finding out about the ‘arcanepunk' world through the environment and collected items rather than just conversation. It's been an opportunity for Madureira to build his world beyond what's capable in comic panels, which place emphasis on lean, direct storytelling.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Game Upgrades

by Silver, Monday - September 19, 2016 00:37

The latest kickstarter update for Battle Chasers: Nightwar gives estimates for Alpha, Beta and final release. Also announced is the game upgrades under way due to the developers partnership with THQ Nordic.

Game Upgrades

Working with THQNordic has given us the time and cash to do a few cool things with the game. Here are a few things we'll be doing with those added resources:

- More Dungeons! We had planned 5, but will now be creating 8.
- More Abilities! Heroes will now have more animations and greater combat depth
- More Creatures! In a nutshell... more creatures.
- Fishing! The originally planned "Tavern Mini Game" stretch goal has blossomed into a fishing mini-game system that will be used throughout the game
- More Polish! We're adding to the game, but also putting time into simply spit-shining many of the features we were already doing.

And those are just a few. We can't wait to get the game in our backers hands first, and in a matter of months!

[...]

Dates

First, we have a few announcements regarding time frames for Alpha, Beta, and ship! Check them out below!

Alpha: 4th Quarter 2016 (Targeting end of November)
Beta: 1st Quarter 2017 (Targeting January)
Full Launch: Mid-2017

We also expect our forums to launch around the same time as Alpha hits so we have a home for discussion and feedback.
Physical Release

Speaking of the above-mentioned full release, we're excited to announce that our partnership with THQNordic has allowed us to do a full physical release of the game to retail! We'll be working with THQNordic to figure out the details of a program that'll allow our backers to upgrade to physical copies if they'd like to.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar - Gameplay Footage

by Silver, Thursday - July 14, 2016 05:07

@MMOGamer They report their E3 impression of Battle Chasers: Nightwar.

loading...

Another RPG that that drew my attention this year at E3 was Battle Chasers: Nightwars. The game was successfully kickstarted earlier this year, it is based on a comic book and the creators of the game are the same guys behind Darksiders franchise. The game is actually a JRPG with the art style of a comic book, you will explore random generated dungeons with your three heroes and when you run into enemies you will face them in a turn-based battle. Each hero has two normal attacks that cost no mana, they deal a small amount of damage and they build up overcharge. Overcharge is giving you a temporary mana boost so you can use your special attacks without spending your actual mana but keep in mind that overcharge resets and the end of each combat. There are also the more powerful abilities that cost mana, they can deal AoE damage, heal up all party members or deal a massive amount of damage to a single target. In each dungeon you will be able to carry a specific number of potions and consumables so you will have to manage your resources.

This is due to a recently-finalized partnership with Nordic Games, which will increase the funds we have to make the game while also allowing us to focus on the game development itself, leaving the other stuff (marketing, localization, publishing, and so on) to our new comrades.

You can read more about it on the battlechasers.com Dev Blog!

They have also released a new gameplay trailer.

Work proceeds apace on this great looking game with news on when surveys will be rolling out (they are aiming for February)

Game Updates

Dungeon art, weapon and item designs, new creatures, new heroes... it's all going down daily at the new Airship studio, named The Hangar by one of our community members (and now we must mention Grandma's House for the last time... /singletear).

Here's a look under the hood!

Web Stuff

We are working with our web partner to make sure that everything works smoothly when we move all of our Kickstarter backers onto Battlechasers.com. We're hoping to have it all wrapped up sometime in February, at which point the first stage of surveys will be released to start gathering info and delivering some of the various digital rewards. It should be exciting!

by Hiddenx, Wednesday - September 09, 2015 11:41

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an RPG inspired by the classic console greats, featuring deep dungeon diving, turn-based combat presented in a classic JRPG format, and tons ofsecrets, story and randomly-generated replay goodness.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a love letter to one of our favorite genres of gaming: the JRPG. We grew up playing legends like Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, and Phantasy Star. While many greats continue to come from Japan, very few western developers are creating them.
