Ash of Gods - Iron Man Mode and more

by Silver, Thursday - May 03, 2018 13:05

Update 1.2 for Ash of Gods introduces iron man mode, post-mortem for the story, combat log, and other stuff.

UPDATE 1.2

Hey! In this major update we not just fixed a lot of issues but also added new features, such as hardcore mode 'Iron Man', post-mortem for the story, combat log, portraits and emotions feature for multiplayer and many balance changes for single player.

IRON MAN MODE

As you may know, we were very attentive to community feedback after the release, and one of the very first problems was very high difficulty of the game. Of course, we took it into account and made some changes to make the game more comfortable.

But this decision also disappointed the ones who prefer to face challenges, that's why we decided to make a separate hardcore mode for them—and today we are glad to introduce you 'Iron Man':

  • You have only one save
  • No lowered attributes for AI units
  • AI has no limitations since the very first level of Reaping
  • You can't change the level of Reaping manually
  • Balanced abilities, which can be used to create so-called 'imba-tactics' based on such classes as guardian, fighter and archer in small teams
  • Three additional achievements which could be earned in hardcore mode only
POST-MORTEM

Players who already beat Ash of Gods, also wanted to know more about what happened in the end of the story and what happened to the rest of their beloved characters.

It was a great idea, and we changed the end of the game with post-mortem, where you can find some additional details about what happened with the world and those characters who still alive. But keep in mind, that fate of characters are non-linear as well and depends on your unique story.

COMBAT LOG

Now you can track everything what happens on a battle field with combat log. It is hidden on default but you can easily turn it on by pressing the icon with 'L'-letter near the clock.

Combat log available in both single-player and multiplayer.

PORTRAITS AND EMOTIONS

Now you can talk with your opponent in multiplayer via our chat analogue, which allows to share emotions like 'Well played!' or 'Victory will be mine!'

Bots also use emotions to answer you.

SINGLE-PLAYER
  • Added new 'Iron Man' mode and three achievements
  • Added post-mortem which explains what happened with alive characters and what happened in the final video
  • Added combat log
  • Added option to turn off autofocus of combat camera
  • Lo Pheng's team now getting increased amount of experience—both Pheng and Thorn teams should have equal level in the end
  • Strixes usage of Thorn's team increased on three strixes a day
  • Changed sorting of the deck in inventory (now sorting for level and availability)
  • Numerous balance changes for abilities (guardian, archer, fighter, spearman)
  • Added Galaxy support (achievements and overlay) for GOG version of the game
MULTIPLAYER
  • Added portraits and emotions feature
  • Added combat log
  • Injuries in common fights are disabled
  • Added injuries information to profile's window
  • Added version check when connecting to server

Pladio spotted a new update for Ash of Gods:

  • Corrected the behavior of UI on authorization and entering the multiplayer mode, if you try to close it by the “Esc” button
  • Fixed issue with sorting and displaying items in team management
  • Fixed a problem which made the animation for passive skills freeze if the unit was killed with a card

  • We add clans to the multiplayer - about a third is ready
  • We test the 'Iron man' mode with high difficulty
  • We test the integration of GOG Galaxy (achievements, overlays, cloud storage)
  • We test "postmortem" after the final video - it has already been translated into all languages and added into the game
  • We test the battle log
  • We do additional editing for the English language (now with the help of 4 people - two new editors from our translation company and with the help of community members - Reavy and K. Constantine)
  • Preparing for the LQA for the Polish language. If you speak Polish and can help us—please, write in the comments.

Ash of Gods - Reviews

by Hiddenx, Sunday - April 01, 2018 09:16

Some reviews for Ash of Gods: Redemption:

Capsule Computers:

Ash of Gods: Redemption offers a refreshing and unique combat system, coupled with some mesmerizing visuals following a rich and complex story.

Score: 8/10

Pro Gamer:

In the end, Ash of Gods has been great. It had that unique art style appeal, I thought it would never work since Banner Saga was hugely successful in the first place but Ash of Gods pulls it into a fresh new appeal. It has the length and the guts of a RPG and the pull that keeps you stuck into the game. The mechanics are simple but works. Not a lot to take in but you have to think out your next move. The soundtrack made it for me and tipped it over. I have nothing bad to say about Ash of Gods. It was a little under the radar and it’s one of those gems that a lot of people may not hear of but you’ll hear someone else talking about it. I’d gladly jump back in and with the addition of multiplayer online to keep that Ash of Gods feel going.

Score 10/10

Gamer Professionals:

All in all, Ash of Gods is still just about worth your time. The art style will immediately resonate and make this title stand out from the crowd where its gameplay and story might not capture that much attention. If someone has already played both of the Banner Saga games and is looking for something along those lines, then definitely look at picking up this title. Otherwise, this game is worth a look for fans of adventure and action games a like, though definitely a measured one.

Score: 6.5/10

Ash of Gods - Patches

by Myrthos, Friday - March 30, 2018 12:06

A few patches have been released for Ash of Gods since its release. This is the information on the latest update:

Hey! Balancing patch for the AI behavior at the Reaping level of 4+ (see details below) is on the way which brings some balance to difficulty level and AI behavior. We also would like to explain a couple of things about how it works.

The difficulty in the game is set by several matrices—the complexity changes smoothly from chapter to chapter due to the increasing coefficients for AI, so at the beginning of the game we weaken enemy's AI, and in the end we strengthen them to keep up with the developed player's units.

The second matrix—regulates the increasing levels of the Reaping, which add up to the parameters of the chapters and, most importantly, changes the key AI settings—its responses to defense, attack, tactical depth of analysis, priority of targets. So, for example, when Harvest level is more than 7, AI attempts to attack units that already have injuries, and on difficulty 2, it almost does not see protection and happily attacks those who would receive no damage.

We constantly collect impersonal combat stats—how many turns and round combat lasts, what units are the most effective, what AI did and how it affected the game. We also constantly read your feedback and recommendations on Steam and Discord and thus we have decided to improve the behavior of AI at levels 5 and above, allowing AI to analyze the field better, respond better to units in defense and counter-attack, better choose its goals.

Ash of Gods - Released

Ash of Gods: Redemption has released on Steam and GOG.

About This Game

Ash of Gods: Redemption is a turn-based RPG that combines tactical combat, CCG elements, and a constantly evolving story in which no one is safe from death, including the main characters.

GAMEPLAY

Ash of Gods is the story of three separate protagonists rising in response to a centuries-old menace once thought to be mere folklore.

Ash of Gods’ storyline is constantly evolving in response to players’ choices, sometimes even resulting in death. But, the death of a character is not game over. Instead, the story moves forward with the death of that character and previous choices continuing to impact future events.

Combat in Ash of Gods is a blend of both traditional turn-based strategy and CCG gameplay. While individual tactics will depend upon the skills and classes of your characters, you will unlock and accumulate cards that have the power to unleash powerful abilities, sometimes altering the course of an entire battle.

WHAT MAKES ASH OF GODS UNIQUE

  • Decisions with Major Impacts

Every decision, whether on or off the battlefield, has the capacity to alter the course of events and the fate of your party with major repercussions. But, even the death of your leader is not the end of your journey.

  • No Random Dice Rolls

There are no dice throws to determine chance-to-hit or the force of a blow. In Ash of Gods, true tacticians must master the skills of their classes and harness the powers granted by their limited supplies of cards, or suffer the consequences.

  • AI that Adapts to You

Ash of Gods’ AI adapts to your style of play to ensure a consistently challenging experience with no room for cheap tactics or invincible team builds.

  • PvP Multiplayer

Challenge other players and compete for a spot on the leaderboards. Unlock new characters, upgrades, and cards to customize your tactics even further.

  • Rewards for Risk

Expend your own HP for a last-ditch attack. Go into battle with a smaller team to get better cards and quicker rounds. Take the shorter, but more dangerous route to save on resources. Ash of Gods rewards those willing to take the risks.

Ash of Gods - Developer Diary#8

by Silver, Tuesday - March 20, 2018 13:03

The latest developer diary for Ash of Gods goes over what to expect post-release. Ash of Gods is due to release March 23rd.

With only a week left until the release it’s time for me to tell you “See you at the Terminum” (hey, guys, stress on the first syllable). The first issue of our diaries was published on December 22, 2016, and now you read the last one. I’ll also write postmortem, but it seems to me that the format of the statement will be stating the facts and full of bragging or tears.

All this time I tried to talk about everything as it is – without special embellishments, lies, exaggerations and marketing nonsense, which is often freely or not freely added to their own diaries by different teams. In this issue, we will get acquainted once again and I will tell about all who somehow worked a lot on the game. I’ll tell you how things are with the console and mobile versions of the game and I will tell you about the terrible dispute between me and our publishing director.

Our plans

Right now we are starting to prepare for porting the game on the consoles (Xbox, PS4, Switch) – we signed an agreement with the publisher “Buka” and they will be porting and publishing the game in retail. As we have promised to you during the Kickstarter campaign the game on the consoles will be released 2-4 months after the PC version. Forgive us for not managing to make the controller support on the PC right at the start – we will add this feature to the PC version of the game together with porting on the console. I really want us to translate the game into as many languages as possible. Now we have Russian, English, German, Italian, Chinese, Ukrainian. Soon we will finish with Polish, French, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.

When we’re done with consoles, we’ll start working on mobile devices (Android, iOS). It will be at the very end of the year or early in 2019. Maybe I’ll try to check on how difficult it is to build a game on Ps Vita – perhaps it’s not as difficult as it seems?

Ash of Gods - Interview @ Neocrisis

by Hiddenx, Sunday - March 11, 2018 20:39

Farflame spotted an Ash of Gods interview at Neocrisis:

Ash of Gods Interview

We had the chance to get a few questions answered for Ash of Gods out on PC. They were answered by Nikolay Bondarenko, AurumDust's CEO.

What inspired you to make this game?

This is a combination of things. Back In 2007, I had the opportunity to make my own game when I worked in TVX. The idea was to combine card and turn-based gameplay, and the story and meta-gameplay was built around the control of special structures - ziggurats. The financial crisis of 2008 buried that project, but not the idea.

A few years later, the books of Sergey Malitsky helped me to rethink the presentation of such a story. And The Banner Saga in 2013 showed that you can present a complex and long story in my favorite 2D format, a sort of way to rethink the format of the classical Japanese visual novella in the Western manner.

While developing the game, what was the hardest issue(s) that you came across?

The most difficult thing was to find the right people and teach them how to work together. We had to find ways to integrate our workflows, and work as a team, optimizing what we were doing at every opportunity. For example, in Ash of Gods, the first scenes we created took about three to three-and-a-half weeks to draft and complete, while at the end as we got closer to finishing the game, work on such a scene only took three to four days.

The second challenge was balancing the combat system, AI, and dynamic complexity settings. I'm still not sure that we have solved this problem correctly, but it seems to be working well!

The third challenge was dealing with the monstrous complexity of reducing the branches of the plot. Our game is focused on the decisions a player makes, and so there is an incredible number of story branches. We drew branch schemes of varying degrees of detail, prototyped and wrote these branches in Articy Draft (a development tool), and still, over and over again, the QA team started the day with the words, "But if a certain character dies here, then everything breaks”.

Farflame spotted the Ash of Gods developer diary #6:

DEVELOPER DIARY #6

Putting a hand on my heart, I can say that I did not plan to write this diary, but in our profiles on social networks a pool of questions had accumulated, which I would like to answer all at once and I just have a little time for it. This time I will talk about how we made content – characters, effects and why there is so much text in the game. I will add a little bit about the readiness of the Feng’s line. I will also talk about the state of the translation and the parallel translation into 9 languages. If the text seems too serious, bear in mind that I am writing it quite sober – this seems to be the first such diary, give me a little slack for it.

Ash of Gods - Kickstarter Update

by Hiddenx, Saturday - October 28, 2017 05:58

The Lo Pheng storyline will be added to Ash of Gods:

ASH OF GODS RELEASE AND LO PHENG STORYLINE

Hey guys! We were pretty busy but we got some really important and great news for you to share. Some of you who follow us in socials already famous with some of our news, I believe. But if you don't then get yourself comfortable! And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube channel to keep yourself updated.

RELEASE AND ADDITIONAL STORYLINE
Let’s start with Lo Pheng storyline. As you may remember, it was a big part of our Kickstarter campaign, the highest stretch goal but we didn’t make it. Since we didn’t earn enough money for this, we actually decided to drop it. It was hard but we were ought to weigh our possibilities soberly.

But we’ve decided to reconsider this decision at the moment. The thing is, Ash of Gods development is almost in its final stage, and we were thinking about how Lo Pheng story affects the whole world of Ash of Gods. We were thinking about it a lot during the past two months and decided to return it to the game. We so want to make Lo Pheng storyline and believe it is possible even with our limited resources. I reckon we will be able to make approximately 3-4 hours of gameplay if everything will be okay.

But to create the game in the way it was originally designed we will definitely need more time. At the moment we discussing a possibility to postpone the release to March, 2018. This is also will give us some extra time to polish the game which is always a good thing, I believe.

Ash of Gods - interview @ Enklawa

by Myrthos, Tuesday - October 10, 2017 09:01

The Polish website Enklawa Network has interviewed Sergei Bokarev and Anton Bazhenov from Aurum Dust, about Ash of Gods, which got funded on Kickstarter in June of this year.

EnklawaNetwork.pl: First of all, congratulations for your successful campaign of Ash of Gods on Kickstarter! What is a current stage of the game development?

Sergei Bokarev: Thank you! We currently have most of the assets ready and are putting together and working on our alpha build.

Anton Bazhenov: Actually we already have a playable build and even streamed the first chapter of the game to the Russian community. Unfortunately, the build is still raw so it is available for team members only. But we working hard to improve it to share with journalists and players to get some honest feedback.

EN: Can you introduce us to a main story of the game without spoiling too much?

SB: Here’s a summary that describes the story: the world has known seven hundred years of peace. But that peace is about to come to an end. The Feast of the Spring Equinox is in full swing, when the bell in the town hall suddenly begins to ring. Captain Thorn Brenin, the bodyguard Lo Pheng, the scribe Hopper Rouley, and many others, do not know yet that the reapers have returned and intend to drown the entire world in blood so that they may awaken the sleeping gods. By the way, in our intro you may see great battle on the eve of the seven centuries of tranquillity.

June

Ash of Gods - Funded

by Myrthos, Monday - June 26, 2017 15:35

The Ash of Gods Kickstarter campaign managed to get funded in the last 3 days of the campaign and in the process managed to achieve two stretch goals as well, which were at $80K and $85K. These stretch goals are 50+ additional side quests and more epic battle music respectively.

SO WHAT WILL BE IN THE RELEASE?

It will be the story of Thorn Brenin and his circle of people, flavored with a good number of secondary quests (events) that can (and will!) happen to them on their way to the final goal. The quests will reveal more about the heroes and the events taking place in the game world.

Hopper Rouley will follow in Thorn's tracks, allowing the user to see the consequences of the decisions he or she took on behalf of Brenin. In all likelihood, we won't have resources to create the ability to manage Hopper's team or let it participate in battles, although we're going to give it our best try; but only time will tell. At the very least, Hopper will play a large role in the story.

Cutting down on Lo Pheng's storyline is a lot harder for us. We wanted to show the other side of the conflict, but our initial stretch goals proved too ambitious. We want to preserve his influence on the story through the decisions of the players, and not turn him into an ordinary NPC. We'll only know for sure how we're going to handle the Lo Pheng storyline around August. We'll definitely write about it in more detail closer to the time.

As far as localization is concerned, the release will have two official versions—Russian and English. We'd love to get help from the fan community to translate the game into German, French, Polish, Spanish and Portuguese. Unfortunately we won't be able to pay the usual localization rates for all the above-mentioned countries, but we are definitely willing to encourage this process with the help of some nice prizes.

We'll also record an additional battle track for the game, which will help to make the battles slightly more diverse from an audio perspective.

Ash of Gods - 80% funded

by Hiddenx, Tuesday - June 20, 2017 18:58

The Kickstarter project Ash of Gods is 80% funded with 3 days to go. Update #8 explains the combat system:

The Combat System and Its Features

We'd like to start this update with the state of our campaign — over the last two days we’ve had several larger tiers picked by the backers, which puts us at 80% of our goal. We are very excited about this, but also worried it may turn out to be somebody’s sick joke.

Either way, today we continue our previous update on game design. This time we're going to give you more detail about Ash of Gods' combat system.

 THE PROTOTYPE

As you probably already know, we're devoting a lot of time to the development of the combat system. Initially it was a table-top prototype in which we played hundreds of games with paper tokens in order to understand how the game would work.
The next step was the creation of the web-prototype which we tested with players. We didn't just note down the players' suggestions. We also incorporated some of their comments in the final solution. Currently we’re still actively using the prototype and following the same principles to test new classes. It doesn't have graphics, but if you play the prototype you can already clearly see how the combat system works. The best way of doing this is to look for an opponent on our Discord channel.

Right now we're continuing to work on the fully-fledged combat system, and although it's still buggy, we expect to be able to start testing the real system very soon. For the time being, however, let's tell you a bit more about its capabilities and features.

Ash of Gods - Kickstarter Update

by Hiddenx, Wednesday - May 31, 2017 19:40

Here's Kickstarter update #2 for the turn-based RPG Ash of Gods:

Comics, a new track and few questions

Hi everybody! First of all, we'd like to thank you for your faith in us. It's thanks to your pledges that we've already managed to collect 25% of the goal! Yes, there's still a lot of work to be done, but I'd like to take time out now to thank all of you.

Our first update was a bit boring. Thanks to Aleonymous for the criticism! I need to make up for that oversight. Above you can see a couple of pages from the comic book that we are creating especially for our backers. At this link you can view them at normal resolution. In it we tell the story of how one of the protagonists of the game, Thorn Brenin, and his brother-in-law, Brann Vichti, became sworn enemies.

Important changes to the reward tiers

I want to thank you for your trust, support and help with this project! To celebrate our first small victory, we decided to add more prizes to the reward tiers:

  • Everybody who chooses ALBIUS WATCHMAN ($35) and ALBIUS BURGOMASTER ($45) will also receive the comic book and digital art book.
  • Our OST (now already 50 minutes of music) by Adam Skorupa, the composer of The Witcher will be received by everybody who chooses ALBIUS WATCHMAN ($35) and ALBIUS BURGOMASTER ($45).
  • Everybody selecting the EARLY BIRD — MYTHS OF TERMINUM tier ($65) will receive a CD copy of the music.

Ash of Gods - On Kickstarter

by Silver, Wednesday - May 24, 2017 04:09

Ash of Gods is now on Kickstarter seeking 75K with 31 days to go.

loading...

Ash of Gods is a mix between a roguelike role-playing visual novel and an online turn-based strategy game. It has been heavily inspired by The Banner Saga series, Japanese visual novel games, and the spirit of The Darkest Dungeon. The game is being developed with Unity and will be available on PC first.

An emphasis on roguelike storytelling. The choices you make, the paths you take and the battles you fight inevitably affect the story and the world around you. Your team's resources and time are limited, and on your journey you will face many choices. You decide who lives and who dies to ensure that you continue steadfastly along your path. If you rush forward mindlessly, you will gradually lose your characters, including the major ones. But even your party leader's death will not lead to "game over"!

Ash of Gods - On Steam Greenlight

by Silver, Sunday - May 14, 2017 12:49

Ash of Gods is on Steam Greenlight and is expected to release by the end of 2017.

loading...

Ash of Gods is launched on Steam Greenlight but it needs your help to become greenlit. We are working on this project for almost a year, all this time we are very motivated by your support. But now it is even more important. Vote for the game (we really need it) and add it to your favorites to be updated. And spread the word among your friends, of course!

Ash of Gods is a mix between a roguelike role-playing visual novel and an online turn-based strategy game. It has been heavily inspired by The Banner Saga series and The Darkest Dungeon.

The days of mankind are numbered. Terrible tales of the past come to life, and monstrous creatures known as reapers return to the world to drown it in blood and awaken the sleeping gods. Retired captain Thorn Brenin, bodyguard Lo Pheng and errant scribe Hopper Rouley try to avoid the great harvest and save the people who entrusted their lives to them.

Limited resources leads to a difficult choice: you will have to sacrifice your party members to save the lives of others. Each decision you make affects the world of the game and the development of the plot, and even the death of one of the protagonists will not lead to a load of conservation, but will also have consequences.

The game is being developed with Unity and will be available in the end of 2017.

Ash of Gods - Rotoscoping: Behind the Scenes

by Silver, Monday - December 12, 2016 11:38

The developers of Ash of Gods are using rotoscoping for their in-game animations.

To create in-game animations we are using a technique called rotoscoping (you can learn more about it http://y2u.be/jWi8ljDdKDM), the first step of which is to shoot a video with an actor. As a true indie team - we shot the video ourselves and the actor was one of our friends. Take a look at the way we have created the materials that will be used to create some really cool in-game animations.

Ash of Gods - In Development

by Hiddenx, Tuesday - November 29, 2016 21:22

The multi-genre-mix Ash of Gods is in development right now. Aurum Dust Studio estimates a November 2017 release date:

Ash of Gods is а multi-genre project that features most of the typical elements of a visual novel, tactical turn-based role-playing game and card strategy. This is a story intending to show all the complexity and ambiguity of moral choice. Good people often become rascals while inhumans behave more human-like than humans. This is the story of "angels" who after being given free will turned the life of humans into hell in the absence of a god. This is a novel that shows you that no conflict has a right or a wrong side because even your enemies have mothers and children.

Unique rogue-like storytelling in which each of the characters can die. Each of your decisions affects further plot development. Consequences may be immediate or come after a pretty long time. Momentary benefit may cost a character a life, while sacrifice will make the walkthrough of one of following episodes easier. As in real life, it’s very hard to predict all the consequences of the choices you make. A rude word may provoke a lethal conflict and a wound in battle may lead to death in a story mode. Remember: imprudent management of resources will lead to the death of the whole party.

The game release is scheduled for November 2017.
