Regalia - Review Roundup

by Myrthos, 2017-05-23 12:27:11

Here are a couple of reviews for Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs.

PopGeeks, positive

Even the more over-the-top moments, like Monty Python references or a blacksmith character with a tiny tutu-wearing dog, hold back just enough to keep things charming rather than exhausting. It also helps that the storyline is comparatively prosaic: instead of the usual “chosen one destined to save the world,” Regalia focuses on a young royal family attempting to rebuild their decaying kingdom and pay back their family debts. Regalia is in beta, and the developers are still working diligently to fix a few final bugs, but based on what they’ve accomplished so far, this could be one of the best indie RPGs of the year.

OnRPG, 4/5

All in all, Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs is a true gem of the indie scene. Easily the most fun tactics game I’ve picked up in the past year, and at a fraction of the price of what the big shot developers would charge for such a masterpiece. The narrative, world building, character personalities, combat mechanics, and RPG progression system all come together in such a neatly woven fabric that it pains me knowing how little attention the game has received leading up to launch.

MMOExaminer, positive

Despite its initial simplicity, Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs has everything to please those looking for a unique strategy-like JRPG-based monarch simulator. The game has beautiful graphics, a fitting soundtrack with some beautiful moments, and a lot more intricate systems that are surprisingly easy enough to understand. Its pace is perfect for chill play sessions and the characters are so charming and funny that it’s hard not to fall for each and every one of them.

Brash Games, 7/10

Overall, Regalia is good at what it does and, in my eyes, the developers have certainly delivered a solid product, not only to the Kickstarter backers, but those who were looking for something new in the genre. While the game has a rather slow start, once things pick up, you’ll most likely find yourself enjoying it a little more. Still, the game has its flaws, and it certainly shows, and it’s most certainly not a game for everyone. It doesn’t exactly have a really captivating storyline but I found the combat, the time management stuff and the dialogue to provide a nice little mix from which I can take a lot of fun. In the end, you’re most likely looking at about 30 hours of gameplay which may or may not be your cup of tea.

DVS Gaming, 9/10

This isn't just a game made with love, it's a refined game of love. I don't always look on the bright side of games, but it's been awhile since a game made me this happy. It's not perfect, but there's a lot to enjoy. Thanks to the mix of Strategy, Town Building, and CYOA elements, you won't need to worry about the game losing steam. I will definitely play more of this after I write this review.

Gamespew, 8/10

There are some negatives, mostly with the combat sections. They do tend to last for an awfully long time, even on the fastest setting, and the camera placement can be rather annoying and stiff. Overall though, these negatives are not enough to take away from the enjoyment that Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs gave me. It’s a safe bet for anyone looking to scratch an old tactical JRPG itch. It may not reinvent any part of the wheel, but it reconstructs it in a way that is quite admirable.
