Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Wrath of the Necromancer Review @ Screenrant

by Hiddenx, Thursday - November 05, 2020 20:34

Screenrant checked out the DLC Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Wrath of the Necromancer:

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Wrath of the Necromancer Review - Fear The Reaper

The new DLC expansion for Iratus: Lord of the Dead, titled "Wrath of the Necromancer," adds haunting new enemies, dungeons, and crafting options.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead has risen from the grave once again with the new Wrath of the Necromancer DLC, which launched on Steam on October 26. Unfrozen and Daedalic Entertainment’s point-and-click dungeon crawler combined the roguelike RPG gameplay of titles like Dungeon Keeper and a novel minion-crafting system to great effect back in April, and now the game’s creators have added in some more undead fun.

The overall plot of Iratus: Lord of the Dead remains mostly unchanged in this expansion, as players are still placed in the role of the titular Necromancer as he guides his undead minions through the levels of the underworld, plotting his vengeance against those who sealed him away centuries ago. The basic 2D gameplay remains the same as well: players command their undead forces to use their unique abilities to drain an enemy's Health or Stress Meter, which can cause them to literally die of fright and leave their remains as building materials for Iratus's forces.

[...]

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Wrath of the Necromancer largely feels like more of the same, but given how fun the main game is this isn't a bad thing. The new content provides plenty of challenge and variety for would-be conquerers looking to unleash their undead hordes upon the world, and players who loved Iratus’ macabre tone and minion-crafting gameplay will enjoy facing off against the new foes provided in Wrath Of The Necromancer - that is, if they survive.

RPGWatch Feature - Iratus: Lord of the Dead Review

by Myrthos, Monday - September 21, 2020 20:26

Forgottenlor checks out if playing the evil side in a dungeon crawler is something to enjoy in this review of Iratus: Lord of the Dead.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead is a reversed dungeon crawler. Instead of playing a group of heroes who travel through a dungeon to face some ancient evil, you play Iratus, who is a necromancer that has been unintentionally freed from his tomb by foolish grave robbers. The necromancer sends his minions to conquer a series of catacombs in order to make it to the surface, where he can realize his dream of extinguishing all life. As a traditional villain, Iratus leaves most of the dirty work to his minions, whom he supports from a safe distance with his magic. The necromancer must also manage a number of resources, so he can replace dead minions, bolster existing ones, and increase his own powers. Anyone who has played or seen Darkest Dungeon will see its influence on Iratus: Lord of the Dead. Iratus must escape his confinement and defeat all the mortal enemies who face him. Each battle is potentially dangerous, and minions are only to a certain degree expendable. Battles are from the side view, and undead minions have different powers which can be executed dependent on where they stand in the battle formation. The game also has some rogue-light qualities, such as having only one save and a somewhat random dungeon floor layout. But Iratus: Lord of the Dead is in many ways its own game, for better or worse.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Review @BagoGames

by Silver, Sunday - May 24, 2020 21:19

BagoGames reviewed Iratus: Lord of the Dead and gave it a 9/10.

This is a game that slowly gets Iratus’ undead fingernails into you, and before you know it you’ll be up for all hours of the night battling through “just one more room”. In a way it’s more accessible than Darkest Dungeon because it’s very easy to get into. The tutorial is clear, and allows you to work though it at your own pace.

There’s never a need to rush in Iratus: Lord of the Dead, and that’s what puts it ahead of other dungeon crawling roguelike RPGs in my eyes. Part of what makes it so interesting is the way that the lore of the world is told. You only get snippets here and there, certainly no lengthy cutscenes.

For example, the flavour text for one room early on in the starting area mentions how the miners found in the game are criminals, and general wastes of space. They’ve dug down deeper than any sane person would, but only because they’ve been drugged to the point that they aren’t aware of what they’re doing.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Review @ PC Invasion

by Hiddenx, Friday - May 01, 2020 07:34

PC Invasion checked out Iratus: Lord of the Dead:

Iratus: Lord of the Dead review – a wicked good time

Bwahahaha!

Iratus: Lord of the Dead felt like it shouldn’t be as fun as it is. You may have heard it described as a reverse Darkest Dungeon. And it is, with a dash of Heroes of Might and Magic in there too, plus the whole dark lord shtick of Dungeon Keeper and Overlord.

The premise is Iratus was once an all-powerful necromancer on the verge of conquering the world with his undead legions. Unfortunately for the forces of evil, some big damn heroes showed up at the last minute to put him down and save the day. But Iratus doesn’t stay dead. Our bad boy is back and mad as hell. So it’s time to raise some minions and take over the world. Iratus is not a complex character, and there’s not much story going on here apart from what’s necessary to move the action.

What our villain lacks in subtlety, he more than makes up for in snark — Iratus’ contemptuous asides, directed at enemies and servants alike. His remarks are well-voiced and motivate the player to slaughter the “innocent” and not care too much about the minions. Because they will die. Again and again.

[...]

Iratus: Lord of the Dead tweaks the team tactics formula of Darkest Dungeon but cuts down on the management aspect to focus firmly on moving quickly from combat to combat. It lacks the narrative flair or emotional punch of its inspiration but makes up for it with satisfying tactical options and a balanced challenge level.

Score: 7/10

Additionally, thanks to a successful Early Access phase, the first large expansion Iratus: Wrath of the Necromancer has been announced for September.

The necromancer and his mouldy minions have hundreds of different skills you must develop and combine effectively in order to fight your way out of your crypt and get your revenge on the good guys.

With the full release comes two new epic dungeon levels, more enemies, items, quests and the three levels that have been playable since Early Access launch also have additional content. Of course, the full release also contains all content and quality of life updates that have been implemented since last year.

Iratus: Lord of The Dead was Steam No. 1 at its Early Access launch and has been very popular with the community ever since, with about 90% positive user reviews. Fans can look forward to the large expansion Iratus: Wrath of the Necromancer, coming in September, where they can once more become a megalomaniacal necromant, with more story content, additional bosses, minions and more to enjoy.

  • Roguelike elements: minions that die are gone for good and the game saves automatically, making each choice irreversible.

  • Detailed 2D graphics and a gloomy atmosphere of dark fantasy.

  • Iratus himself is voiced by the voice-acting legend Stefan Weyte, famous for his performance as Caleb in the cult game series "Blood"

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - DevBlog on The Nearest Future

by Silver, Thursday - January 23, 2020 04:51

A new devblog for Iratus: Lord of the Dead talks about the release, pre-patch, and open beta testing.

Dev Blog 2020: the nearest future

Hello, necromancers!

Iratus: Lord of the Dead has been in early access on Steam for over half a year. During this time, we have received a huge amount of feedback from our players. Thanks to all who shared their suggestions for improving the game, Iratus is getting better and better because of you!

In this dev blog we will start sharing our near-term plans and upcoming features.

The release, Pre-Patch and open beta testing.

As we said, we are planning to release the full version in the second quarter of 2020.
Now we have a large number of new functions and mechanics, so we decide to release Pre-Patch, which includes most of the planned changes (but NOT new content – that will be just in the full version of the game). There are a lot of new features, so we decided to switch to a new patch in two stages:

1. At the first stage, it will be an open beta test of all new mechanics. Anyone will be able to join the beta branch on Steam with the newest version of the game. Beta testing will begin in February — the exact date will be announced later. Instructions will be published on our Discord server (you can join it now):

2. After the beta testing will be over, a game update will be released for all our players.
Important: saves from old versions will not be compatible with the new version due to significant changes in mechanics. We’ll notify players about this beforehand. The patch date will be announced later.

So, what new mechanics are we introducing?

Iratus and minion experience

Gaining experience for Iratus and his minions will be much more flexible and intuitive.
How much experience is gained from the effect of an artifact or event will depend on the current level of Iratus and his minions, and even the level of the minion from the Grave will correlate with the level of the current squad. As you progress along the map, you will gain more experience from victories and find more powerful artifacts and minion items in Coffins, Chests and on Sacrificial Altar.

Minion Upgrading

The most significant new feature is a much more convenient system for upgrading minion characteristics. Many players don’t like the current part system:
  • Random drop — the player is forced to roll the necessary bonuses. Some amount of randomness is certainly needed, but we want to give you the opportunity to more comfortably customize your minions without RNG influence.
  • Part creation requires a lot of routine actions and a lot of clicks.
  • Upgrading-with-parts system is not intuitive and too complicated for new players.
  • The most popular strategy was to cumulate low-rarity parts until the moment when you can make a Legendary part from them. In our opinion, it will be much more pleasant for players to immediately receive any obvious increases to the minion characteristics, without the need to store resources.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Review

by Hiddenx, Saturday - July 27, 2019 08:55

Game Space has reviewed Iratus: Lord of the Dead:

Iratus: Lord of the Dead PC Review

Seething forth from the dark depths below comes a new game by the dev team at Unfrozen. Iratus: Lord of the Dead puts you in charge of things most dark by being the Necromancer bringing forth undead beings to try to lay claim to humanity and all those silly living things. It features base building, leveling, sending your minions to fight and explore the depths of the area around you and building new undead from scratch. Is Iratus just another emo goth wannabe or is he truly a Necromancer to be feared? This is our Iratus: Lord of the Dead review for PC.
[...]
Summary
Overall Iratus: Lord of the Dead is a great game to play and possibly get frustrated with at higher levels because it is a tactical roguelike. If you enjoyed Darkest Dungeon I would wholeheartedly recommend this game. It has that feel but making you the big bad guy with a horde of undead you make and send out to do your bidding.

Score: 9.5/10 Amazing

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Early Access Release Date

by Silver, Tuesday - February 05, 2019 19:57

A new update for Iratus: Lord of the Dead announces that the Early Access release date has been pushed back to May.

Early Access Date Announcement

Posted by Unfrozen Studios (Creator)

In October last year, we indicated that we were aiming for a February Early Access Launch.  Unfortunately, we have had to revise this to May this year.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience that has been caused because we know that many of you have been looking forward to this release. There are many ideas that we want to implement in the game to make it interesting, but we underestimated the amount of work it would take. This forces us to reschedule the Early Access on Steam once again.

Although we hope to have everything polished to this moment, we certainly feel much more comfortable by choosing late spring as a target Early Access Launch window.  Iratus: Lord of the Dead is our first project and we’re putting all our efforts into it to make it better, but as it turns out, time planning is still not our strong suit.

Furthermore, we began cooperating with a reliable partner which we will introduce to you in the nearest future. We also want to add that we are receiving valuable support and assistance which will help us to meet our goals and prepare for Early Access Launch on Steam.

Nevertheless, development is making a lot of progress and we are not going to slow down. We continue to actively work on creating new content and implementing new features. For instance, here are our new backgrounds as well as the brand new minion and enemy:

bkgr1
bkgr2
Fallen Dhampir

The Fallen Dhampir feels the burden of her curse far stronger than other minions. Having submitted herself to her vampiric nature only served to put into perspective all the things that she has lost, even though her murderous strength has not waned a bit. Her only escape from the shame and guilt of her submissions lie in brief bouts of bloody euphoria she experiences as she drains your enemies dry. She has a whole eternity ahead of her to get used to it.

dhampir1
[...]

Dhampir

As bloody and dangerous as vampires are they still see some allure among mortal kind. Sometimes this leads to cults forming around the worshiping these bloodsuckers, a fact that they are all too willing to promote. But if normal vampires might occasionally see some popularity, the Dhampir is a full blown-celebrity! While having all the perks of a vampire with none of the downsides make her into a brooding hero that bards can swoon over, she herself has a rather easy and boring unlife marked with the occasional bouts of undead-slaying. There is also the slight issue that she is not truly immortal and will eventually die unless she fully embraces her vampire half. And while she has decided to oppose you, you wonder if she could make for a powerful ally if pushed to the brink of mortality.

To all of our backers and supporters, once again we are very sorry that we're asking for a little more time than initially planned. We cannot thank you enough for your enduring support. We promise to use the time to improve the quality of Iratus: Lord of the Dead.

Please stay tuned and we will announce big news soon.

Sincerely,
 Unfrozen Team

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Changes in Release Dates

by Silver, Tuesday - September 25, 2018 13:27

A new update for Iratus: Lord of the Dead announces a change in release dates.

Changes in release dates and future plans.

Posted by Iratus Official

During the alpha test we received a huge amount of feedback and realised that we can make Iratus: Lord of the Dead even better, but this requires the most valuable resource – time. We regret to inform you that the release of Iratus: Lord of the Dead has been delayed and we sincerely hope for your understanding.

We seek to take into account all wishes that we received during the alpha test but polishing the game is also time-consuming.

Our team is actively working on balancing and also making a new content for the third floor. We will begin the beta tentatively in December and we expect to receive a lot more feedback to continue the polishing. The Early Access of Iratus: Lord of the Dead will begin in February 2019 so that everyone will be able to play and help us refine the project.

We apologise for the delay. Devblogs with new content and also devstreams will be organised in the near future.

You will receive further details soon.

Yours respectfully,

Unfrozen Team

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Funded

by Silver, Tuesday - June 19, 2018 00:27

Iratus: Lord of the Dead has been funded on Kickstarter.

Iratus: Lord of the Dead - Minions!

by Silver, Monday - June 18, 2018 02:18

The latest update from Iratus: Lord of the Dead introduces us to some new minions. The Kickstarter has three days remaining and is close to funding.

Devblog #3

Posted by Iratus Official

In our previous devblog we introduced you to the Dwarven Floor and the many new enemies within, which are certain to oppose Iratus in his quest for vengeance and destruction. This time, we would like to show you a few new minions that were created by our exasperated necromancer. Well... they were really designed by our Lead Artist. At the moment we are working on their abilities and animations and we hope to update you on the result in our future devblogs!

***
Ghoul

A ghoul is a surprisingly proud predator, seeing themselves as the apex on the food chain. Stronger, faster and sleeker than any mortal or undead, they have the attitude of particularly lazy cats, wanting the world to revolve around them. In the end, only the threat of utter destruction can make them remember their place as servants of Iratus.

***
Bone Golem

A bone golem is actually a compromise. Normally it is not possible to craft an undead such as this without an equally large body to serve as the foundation (and there are precious few giants around). Only Iratus discovered a way around this limitation: the golem is made of several bodies, held together by the forces of decay and entropy, constantly crumbling and regenerating to maintain its form. Living in a constant cycle, these creatures would make for interesting subjects of philosophical study, were they not far more effective on the battlefield.
Work process

We're still working hard to bring you new updates, which will include bug fixes and fresh content.

As you know, the Bride of Iratus is hysterically jealous and won't let anyone get close to her beloved lord. Our archer will receive a feature which increase her accuracy against female enemies.

Furthermore, the Shade will get its own rework in order to diversify its tactical applications. We would like to make this minion more interesting for our players. For example, the Shade will now move enemies when using his skill "Dark Light".

If you played the alpha or watched the streams, you've probably noticed that the Heavy Firethrower causes a lot of pain, especially when he begins the fight in the first position. Don't worry, it won't happen again! Our apologies :)

Following our players' requests we are also going to add the ability to skip your turn, to hopefully diversify your tactical arsenal. In an upcoming update will add a "Wait" button that will allow your minion to move in the end of the initiative que.

We made tooltips to show hit chance and critical damage on a particular enemy. You will be able to turn tooltips on and off in the settings menu.

Finally, our Save Menu has become more convenient.

These are the main changes to date. Our work is ongoing and we will give you more details for you in a week. We are happy to answer any questions you might have!
