The middle act of the Live by the Sword: Tactics Story Mode is now available, adding more cutscenes and battles which follow on directly from the dramatic conclusion of Act 1. Having uncovered a sinister plot, more will be revealed about our band of heroes as they face off against multiple challenging encounters on their path to save the kingdom.

This update puts us three quarters of the way through Early Access, plus we have some exciting announcements we're looking forward to sharing with you next year.

Greetings, friends!

We are glad to announce that v.1.04 content update has finally been completed.

In this version, we paid the utmost attention to the quality of life updates we decided upon in earlier community posts.

Now you can finally use your own picture files to create portraits for your character, and even customize their appearance in-game. (screenshot)

Also Trudograd now supports the ATOM Cloud save transfer system, using which you can not only save progress between different versions of the game on different devices, but also transfer a character from the original ATOM RPG to Trudograd, using our cloud server instead of an actual save file. Based on your suggestions, we introduced the mechanic of comparing equipment, expanded the set of icons for aimed shots, and of course added several new characters, quests and locations to the game. (screenshot)

There is still a lot of work ahead of us, for example, the creation of a ModKit, but for now we hope that you will appreciate the work we have done so far, and get enough pleasant impressions from returning to the snow-covered streets of Trudograd :)

Still, rounding these glitches out first was more important than rushing headlong into creating new stuff, so we hope you appreciate the work we put in this one.

Story
Welcome to the gruesome Land of Vendir: The Royal Family makes their money from child slavery, the economy of whole towns rides on selling severed up chunks of dead bodies and warfare is as common as rain. Poverty, plague and destitution are the status quo- with most citizens rising to little better than the rat-infested gutters they were born in.

When an elderly woman falls sick- she sends a message to her children, who live all the way at the other end of the Kingdom in The Capital City of Galdos, requesting their urgent aid. It will be a long and arduous quest for the siblings, one made all the more difficult by the tyrannous King Elrik. He rules the city with a fierce iron fist, inflicting the most torturous of punishments for even the slightest of crimes and, just as the siblings are about to embark, he unveils his harshest rule yet: nobody can leave the city again.

Dare they commit such a serious offence when the punishment for merely being drunk in public is death? When men are tortured in the streets for stealing the food they need to survive? When people are burnt alive for failing to pay their debts? With little to no choice, the siblings must make their way from one muddy end of the Kingdom to the other- inciting Elrik’s wrath every step of the way.

The Eighth Era of Vendir is about to be written, but what conclusion will be woven into the tapestry? Will Galdos finally be free of King Elrik’s cruel regime? Happiness system has been entirely reworked

Happiness is now accumulative. Some actions, such as assigning companions to the campfire, generate Happiness points. Conversely, not feeding or not paying your troops results in a loss of Happiness points. By accumulating Happiness, you reach levels that give you bonuses. If your total drops too low, your companions will be quick to leave your group. If a companion is ready to leave you, you will be afforded a last chance to convince him to stay with you.

Update (12/11/21, 9:20pm EST): a hotfix for a crash caused by defeating a [REDACTED] station and then a fleet in the same system is out; please re-download the game using the links below.

Update (12/11/21, 4:00pm EST): a hotfix for an audio issue, background flickering during new game creation, cleanup of some dev options left in a dialog, and a few other issues (full list of changes here) is out.

Starsector version 0.95.1a is now out! This is a .1 release, meaning it’s focused on polish, bugfixing, and quality-of-life improvements – but more than the normal share of new features and sweeping changes have found their way into this one, as well!

  • Skill system changed for more flexible builds with more options
  • Several new game-changing top-tier skills, and other new skills
  • All skills can be re-specced, no more “permanent” skills
  • New ships: Eradicator-class Fast Cruiser, Manticore-class Destroyer, Vanguard-class Frigate
  • Missions show the mission target location prior being accepted
  • Dynamic slipstreams that enable quick and efficient travel in hyperspace
  • Sensor ghosts in hyperspace!
  • Improved early access to ships and weapons through arms dealers
  • Phase cloak changes to make phase ships easier to deal with if they’re outmatched
  • Ship AI improvements; ability to issue a “defend” order targeting a friendly ship
  • Various balance changes to improve variety
  • Modding improvements
  • Assorted bugfixing, polish, and numerous quality-of-life improvements

There are many more changes; the full patch notes, and the comment thread, are here. This new release should be save-compatible. Due to the skill system changes, skill points and story points invested into any elite skills will be refunded, and the skills will be reset when a save from the previous release is loaded.

We're rounding the corner on 2021 and we're going out with a bang!

We'll be taking some time away from socials during the holidays to recharge and gear up for 2022. You can expect us back and responding to players from the 5th of January.

Which leads us to the question: what's in store next for Mechajammer?

We've put together the Post Launch Roadmap below, which shows what's on the horizon for the game, and when you can expect updates.

Again, a her-uge thank you to the players who have stuck with us since the game's launching, helping surface issues, offering suggestions and generally helping shape our next steps. This Roadmap wouldn't be possible without your input.

So, here's how the next few month's are looking:

December

Since launch, we've put out 4 patches to the game, with a v1.05 on it's way very soon. That's not all though! You can expect unofficial branch updates until the end of December if you opt in to an exclusive 'off the grid' branch, but more on that in a minute.

We'll be bringing you Event Log v2, new quest content, more NPC portraits & expanded dialogue.

You can expect to see a new XP system very soon, too, as well as a balance overhaul and more bug fixes.

January

Key-rebinding is coming!

Improved onboarding and tutorial-flow (we hear you, the tutorial isn't your favourite).

You can also expect Steam Achievements, along with an official achievement guide for those interested, too.

Remaining Keys

Since the original batch of keys went out and the past week I think there’s still ~150 or so backers that haven’t filled out surveys. When those are filled out, we get notifiers every once in a while and will be message you manually about them, so there could be a brief delay on that, though we’ve been checking throughout the day too.

Patching

We're scheduled for additional months of crunching to get the game where we intended it to be. Our next patch includes the finished XP mode option we intended to get in (from new-game) and some balancing overhauls, and that will continue into the new year. We’ll be doing around the clock fixing over the next month to get it up to speed. Modern Wolf’s mechajammer channels will have continued news on releases, patches and bigger updates into the future if you have any additional questions.

If you have any questions for us, please feel free to continue to email or use the kickstarter messaging as we get pinged about it and can get back to you as soon as we can.

GOG Patches

It has just come to our attention that the GOG patches have either been slow to update or not going live. I know for our Serpent launch we were able to rapid fire those, and this is terrible to hear, we're looking into what's going on as quickly as we can.

Digital/Physical rewards

We have what we hope if the final batch of miniatures heading or way soon, though there are some holiday delays. Once verified can send out those final physical reward shipment emails to verify everyone's addresses, especially outside the US where there could have been some issues. Since some of the digital rewards are pictures of the physical ones and require some scans, we’ll just be emailing and sending all that simultaneously.

Expect emails and shipments around end of January for that.

Wartales review (early access): an ambitious and gritty RPG with real promise

“Play against type,” Sin Vega advised in her well good piece on getting the most out of strategy games. I’m sorry Sin. I failed. Tactical RPG Wartales gave me the opportunity to promote a wild boar to the captain of my troupe of wandering mercenaries. I did not. Instead, I fell back into stale, boring habits like “entrusting the lives of my comrades to someone with ambitions outside of ‘moar acorns plz’.” Not a moment goes by that I don’t wistfully consider what might have been.

I’d recruited that boar in the first place by knocking it out and tying it up with a length of rope I found on a dead bandit. Wartales did not inform me this was a possibility until the moment it happened. The game bristles with texture like this; lovely emergent gemstones that form when small details from different systems bear down on each other. Don’t worry too much about all that, though. Most of your day to day worries in Wartales are about where the next bag o’coin or leg o’lamb is coming from, and whether you can get your favourite archer healed up before that nasty shiv wound contracts everyone’s least favourite plague: the plague.

It’s for this reason I decided to start the game again after a good chunk. To try more thievery, to play a bit less cautiously. Promote a boar or two. And it’s here that I discovered just how excited I was to start again, to really clinch an optimal first few hours. Wartales nails the restart, and not all games can claim that. I could point to the depth of systems or an approach to design that trusts the player enough to let them discover things themselves. These are both true to some extent. But I think the most useful thing to impart about Wartales is that it just has, well, a certain special something. Maybe there’s some cool sounding French for that that I’m forgetting. The fact that it’s far from finished has me very interested indeed. Moar acorns, please.

Hello everyone, this is the Troubleshooter development team.

The DLC 'White Lion and Black Witch' will be completed through the next update.

Most of all, the dev team wants to appreciate to you whom were waiting for this moment for a year.
We've already said this many times, but without your interest, we wouldn't have been able to continue development so far.

Taking this opportunity, the dev team would like to express our gratitude once again, and we will continue to be a development team that will not forget the current heart.

We would like to inform you of the planned development work after this DLC.

Complementing the overall content

We are going to complement contents related to the DLC and character ballancing that many players suggested before next spring comes. We are also preparing a new mission type that allows players can fight with various enemies, just like your team fight against VHPD in the scenario mission 'Astonishing Reunion'. Additionally, if you are playing on the Online Mode, you can fight against another player using that mission.

Next work: Second DLC

From the announcement of Wartales earlier this year, to the mad dash to pull together a demo for the Steam festival, to the recent closed beta and final stretch of develoment before release, to right here, right now, orchestrating the release of our FIFTH game as a company...

First off, we'd like to thank everyone who joined us on our journey from the very start with the demo earlier this year, to have had such a positive reception and to see a community of dedicated and helpful players begin to form around the game at such an early stage was incredibly ecouraging for all of us here at Shiro.

Secondly, a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the recent closed Beta, your feedback and suggestions have been incredible and it is largely down to you that we are now able to release Wartales into Early Access with pride.

Early Access

A lot of content and features have been added since the demo and the beta, and throughtout Early Access we will continue to develop, expand, iterate and improve every aspect of the game, alongside all of you with your help and support.

New regions, units, items, quests, features, functions, mini games and much more are well underway internally, and will be making their way to the game over time, and we can't wait to hear what all of you think! And we are all ears for any ideas and suggestions you might have that will help us realise the best possible version of Wartales.

Roadmap

There is no firm roadmap available at this time, as we’re still finalising a lot of our plans and working out the logistics in terms of timing but this is something we are discussing internally and hope to share with you all very soon.

You're on your own, Offworlder.

Calitana is a big, dangerous place; from the jungle to the streets, and the shadowy suburbs in between. Crucially, it’s also an open-world, meaning it can be explored as you see fit. But the level of player-agency lavished upon you, dear off-worlder, goes even deeper than that.

Mechajammer will not ram objectives down your throat. Nor will it offer up waypoints or bread-crumb trails leading to a destination. That’s all on you.

Mechajammer is heavily influenced by the glorious era of (both video and tabletop) games where the sense of adventure was heightened through use of a notepad and pen. You’ll need to be observant and come to your own conclusions about where to go, and how to get there. You’ll explore the world of Calitana at your own pace, but must be wary that around any corner you could face a stray wolf, crazed vagrant, or army of gangbangers.

With all this in mind, you’re probably going to want a nice cosy spot to call home, then.

Outside of Calitana’s central urban-sprawl, on the edges of the city, you’ll establish a base of operations where you can return at your leisure. Here you can heal, hire new companions and accept new quest objectives before heading off into the thick of it once more.

State of the Game: Current Progress | Creation of Level Sections

Hi, dungeon-crawling fans!

It's been a few weeks so it is time for another update! A lot of things have happened and the project is on a good way! So without any further ado, let's get started...

Current Progress

As you may remember, I am currently in the middle of the content creation phase or, more precisely, in the middle of the world-building process. This process has a few stages. It starts with the creation of the level designs "on paper" (or in planning software, as you will see later in this update). It then continues with a blockout phase, where the basic building blocks of the designs are put into place. The finished blockouts are then re-iterated on and eventually replaced with actual game assets (i.e., 3D models of the level geometry, mostly split up into modular parts). After that follows the so-called "detail pass", where detail assets (furniture, rubble, wall decorations, vegetation, etc.) are placed in the level. The whole process is then concluded with a lighting pass, audio assets, visual optimizations, and level logic.

Monomyth is currently in the re-iteration stage (here and there I am already adding details, but mostly I am trying to stick to one task). All areas in the game - from the beginning to the end - have been blocked out. This was an important step because it narrows down the actual scope of the project and keeps it manageable. The levels of Monomyth are no longer just "on paper" designs that could be changed at the drop of a hat. Instead, I am now dealing with a finite set of concrete work tasks, which is infinitely better if your goal is to get things done.

After reviewing my schedule I decided to take a little break from level design and do some game system refactoring (that is, a reworking of the code to make it more maintain- and extendable). That means for the next two weeks I will be doing some coding which I would have otherwise done in January. Level design is a comparatively straightforward challenge from now on and I am trying to prepone any tasks which may cause unpredictable problems. Coding has a tendency to cause such problems, even though I already figured out most of the refactoring on paper, so, fingers crossed! 

Once the code refactoring is done I will continue with the detail pass of the level design. This brings us to the main part of this update...
