The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order - Music of Althas

by Silver, Tuesday - July 30, 2019 09:50

A new update for The Lays of Althas: Sundered Order called Music of Althas.

Music of Althas

Hello, we're back with another update for you, this time giving you a look at the music for Althas. We've had our new composer, Arvin Fekri, working on crafting a distinct sound for Althas and he's created some great pieces.

First we have a general theme for Althas overall, currently planned as the main theme for the overall Althas project.

Next up is a theme for Thenodar specifically, the first region of Althas we are developing. As a region divided between more urbanized lowlands and a more rustic, traditional highland, we wanted to have a blend of instruments that helped represent these two sides to the region's culture.

Next we have a track crafted for towns, specifically Bordrima. This song and ones like it will play in towns and villages outside the three major cities of Thingstów, Arísan, and Múthrand. We'll also leave you with a small snippet of work in progress music, as a taste of what's to come.

You can find more of Arvin's work over at his SoundCloud: M.soundcloud.com

Hope you've enjoyed this peek at the music side of things, stay tuned for more updates about Althas in the weeks to come.

Thanks Farflame!

ATOM RPG - Review @ Gamebanshee

by Myrthos, Monday - July 29, 2019 10:17

Gamebanshee have a review of ATOM RPG up, which the reviewer liked, but with some remarks.

Have you ever wondered, while playing Fallout, how a nuclear conflict of such scale could have affected the other side? Well the developers at the very aptly named AtomTeam clearly did, and after a successful Kickstarter campaign followed by an Early Access phase, they have produced ATOM RPG - an isometric role-playing game that takes place in the Soviet Wasteland.

ATOM RPG is subtitled as “A Post-apocalyptic Indie Game,” and that's exactly what you'll be getting if you decide to purchase it. It looks and plays a great deal like the early entries in the Fallout series, and seeing how that series is now a first-person shooter and on some occasions an online survival game, getting a proper new isometric “Fallout” is not something to be overlooked.

With ATOM RPG getting its final content update back in May of 2019, I decided to see for myself whether it was a worthy spiritual successor or a low-grade clone.

Tears of Avia - Steam Page Update

by Hiddenx, Sunday - July 28, 2019 04:57

The Steam page for Tears of Avia has been updated:

Tears Of Avia is a turn-based strategy and tactics game, set in the beautiful world of Estera.

Estera, a once proud and thriving world, is torn by war between the two large city-states; Tirig, the largest military in the land who praise the Gods, and the city state Helmgar, the Godless heretics to the north. Build your party and venture forth to discover the secrets behind ancient long abandoned cities; and decide where your own morality ultimately lies in this turn-based action strategy game.

loading...

CHARACTERS
Play as a varied and exciting cast of characters on your adventure through Estera, each with their own abilities and view on each other. As war continues to split the land, will camaraderie conquer all or will personal views rip your team apart.

COMBAT
Create your party from five different classes and dozens of playable characters. Combine hundreds of unique skills to ensure victory and never have the same fight twice as each character features its own upgrade and levelling tree.

STRATEGY
Combine abilities to create powerful combos against your foes, or combine defensive abilities to negate the deadliest attacks. Combine burn, freeze, stun, cripple and more to obtain your goals, and use retaliation, redirects, immunities and more to halt the death of your heroes.

NARRATIVE
Decide your fate with a deep branching narrative and choice driven decisions. Your actions may lead to an outcome which the world of Estera may not deserve. Should your party feature characters from all sides of the war, opinions may clash and it may not always be for the better.

WORLD
Explore the stunning world of Estera and breathe in the beautiful hand illustrated locations. Venture deep into murky dangerous woods, roam vibrant busy towns and ransack long forgotten tombs. From the dizzying heights of Tower Of The Ancients to the harsh lands of Arralash, the world is yours to discover.

Swords & Souls: Neverseen - Review

by Hiddenx, Saturday - July 27, 2019 08:36

Game Space checked out Swords & Souls: Neverseen:

Swords & Souls: Neverseen Review

Going into this, I knew nothing about the Swords & Souls series. Apparently, it’s a big one for Kongregate, or so some of the steam community claims. If it’s anything like this, I may have missed out. A semi-action semi-RPG game out of Armor Games studios, this is exactly the kind of game that flies under the radar, and that’s a bit of a shame. This is our Swords & Souls: Neverseen review.

As beautiful and orchestrated and star-studded as some games are, there are some masterpieces where I would rather stick my face in a blender than play. This is neither of those. While the art is good, it’s simple, but it’s consistent, there are no famous voice actors nor sweeping breathtaking vistas. However, it’s also not plagued with mind-numbing blandness, nor is it-thankfully- the visual version of a technicolor yawn. It’s done in 2-dimensional lineart and bright primary colors like grade school, and in this case, it works.
[...]
Summary
Swords & Souls: Neverseen won’t be for everyone, and it’s not a masterwork of video game art. However, Armor Games has remembered the one cardinal rule and has represented it well: a game must be fun. And it certainly was.

Score: 7.5/10 - Good

Vagrus: The Riven Realms - Devlog #22 - Narrative Design

by Myrthos, Friday - July 26, 2019 13:38

This devlog for Vagrus: The Riven Realms is about Narrative Design and the implications on gameplay.

As we are getting closer and closer to releasing the first playable build of the main campaign of Vagrus, it is perhaps a good time to talk a bit about the differences between the open world campaign and 'Pilgrims of the Wasteland'. The focus of this is going to be narrative design and stories but there are going to be implications on gameplay as well.

Encounters of a Random Kind

One of the most noticeable differences between the standalone story and open world (thought the second part of Pilgrims has this to some extent) is the frequency and importance of random encounters. These Events appear while you are traversing the Riven Realms. The longer it is you haven't come across an Event or encounter, the more likely it is that something will come up.

Part of the encounter Events are unique to each location (regions or sub-regions) while others are more generic and thus can appear in a wide variety of locations. The intent was to give interesting (and dangerous) things to do while en-route to some place and of course, to keep players from becoming careless while 'just traveling'.

There's a Right Place for Everything

Another significant part of Events in the open world part are fixed in location. You can find them by the use of Scouting (or by happening upon them on their node) and interact with them by using the Explore button.

A much more elaborate form of these fixed Events are settlement and point of interest Events. We like to call these persistent Events, though many will disappear upon completing them due to narrative reasons.

Have Anything for Sale?

The aforementioned settlement Events are also mostly persistent; many of these you can repeat again and again, as these represent facilities, shops, tasks you can take, or activities you can do in cities or villages. The selection of these Events gives character and utility to settlements; it also makes players travel between them a lot when certain functions are only accessible (or are only profitable) in certain places.

A Tale for the Ages

The meat and potatoes of content when it comes to Events are of course quests and storylines you can take part of. These are typically started in settlements, though some are accessed through random Events, too. Such storylines come in all sizes and varieties. A certain part of these will be dedicated to Companions' personal questlines. These don't only give backstories to your heroes but are also tied into their progress: Prowess levels 3, 6, and 9 are unlocked by reaching certain points of their questlines.

The impact of quests and stories on the world and the player vary as well but many influence one or the other. Tone also plays into this: Vagrus is low key for the most part but sometimes the player does have an influence on things, for example, in deciding which Trading House wins a rivalry to dominate a settlement. Or if a camp of outlaws get to thrive or be ousted by the Empire.

Challenge Accepted

As you can guess, writing and testing all this complexity is quite a task: the challenge to judge and balance the size and difficulty of Events grows exponentially as more and more content is created. Another tough part is to find the sweet spot of the frequency of random Events, as well as their distribution spatially and even in a timeline (would a story activate only in certain season or at a given point of time?).  We have our work cut out for us but the intent is to create a living and changing world that feels dangerous but certainly one you'd want to explore.

We are eager to share the Open world prototype with our Alpha Backers to get feedback about all this and to see what you think of the branching, layered narrative. There are still many things to complete beforehand but we are progressing well, so you can probably expect an announcement about it in the next few months.

by Myrthos, Thursday - July 25, 2019 21:19

Soldak let us know that Din's Legacy has reached the beta phase.

McKinney, Texas, July 25, 2019 - Din's Legacy is now in Beta!

Din's Legacy is nearing the end of Early Access after 43 patches of improvements and new content. It is now in beta and should be fully released in late August!

In the meantime, you can still pick it up and have some input in Early Access.

Din's Legacy is an action RPG with mutating characters, set in a dynamic, evolving, fantasy world for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

During the Orc Schism, the entire Orc race was violently split into Dark Orcs, Zombielords, and the Mutated. The Mutated are tainted with Orc blood, a zombie parasite, and necromancer magic. This makes people seriously mistrust and even fear them. The fact that they slowly mutate over time makes it even worse. Who is going to trust you when you grow horns overnight?

Despite all of this, the Mutated are actually more closely related to the Elves, both their behavior and physically. They want to prove this to the world, but they are facing a tremendous uphill battle.

The trickster god Din was intrigued by their chaotic mutations and burning desire to prove themselves to the world. Always in need of champions, he made a pact with the Mutated. Each volunteer would become one of his champions trying to save the world wherever Din sends them. In return, each time they die in his service he resurrects them to continue their service.

Din's Legacy, as well as the Mutated's and yours, are all in your hands! Can you be the Champion that is needed?

For more information about Din's Legacy head over to http://www.soldak.com/Dins-Legacy/Overview.html

LoA: The Forgotten Crow - Scheduled for August 1

by Myrthos, Tuesday - July 23, 2019 10:42

Legends of Amberland: The Forgotten Crown is scheduled to leave Early Access on August 1, as it will be released at that moment in time.

Here is some info of the game, in case you haven't heard about it before:

Classic party-based western RPG, inspired by games from the 90s era.

Core design choices:
1) Classic, 90 degree rotation, FPP, turn-based, tile movement RPG.
2) Party-based (7 party members assembled upon start).
3) Open world with a big overworld to explore.
4) Fast paced combat. Quick travel. Easy inventory management. No grind.
5) Light, fairy tale like fantasy, epic story about heroes on a noble quest.

Inspiration:
The game is a classic western RPG inspired by the games from the 90s. Basically, it's the kind of game I personally find missing nowadays. Light, fairy tale, epic, heroic and slightly humorous. One that does not take tons of hours to complete or require endless grind to progress. Something that caters to players like me who don't have tons of hours to beat one game but still like to play and have a sort of nostalgia for the way games were made in the old days.

It was inspired by Dungeon Master, Eye of The Beholder 2, Might & Magic 3-5, Crystals of Arborea (a not so well known prequel to Ishar series), GoldBox series (Champions of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn, etc).

Mechanics:
Mechanically it's 100% turn based (so you can go and make tea in the middle of a fight) with grid movement and 90 degree rotation. All this very fast paced, both combat and travel is really fast. The goal was to cut down the boring parts and flesh out the fun parts. Also, there is no loading screen when changing locations or other slowdowns
Overall, the mechanics are pretty traditional and straightforward with modern additions like weightless bag combined with equipment encumbrance system.

World and Storyline:
Storyline is a fairy tale, mythical heroic fantasy. You are the good guys on a quest to fight the forces of evil. The world is non linear, with very few locked areas. You basically can go anywhere and do things in different order. In addition you can choose a different set of quests to finish the game (but those are not mutually exclusive, so you can finish all quests if you like). It's more world driven than story driven. The priority was to make the world feel alive and let you explore it as you wish than follow a linear list of quests.

The game starts when the royal wizard finds out about an old crown that belonged to the royal family for generations. Yet, strangely no one ever heard about the crown and there was just a single mention of it in the royal annals. Upon further study he discovered that there has been cast a powerful spell of forgetfulness of unknown origin which caused everyone in the whole land to forget the crown ever existed. Without knowing who or why someone went to such trouble to conceal the existence of the crown he decided to investigate it. He summoned a party of noble heroes and tasked them with finding whereabouts of the mysterious crown and the origin of the spell.

Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem - New Skills and Animation Cancel

by Myrthos, Monday - July 22, 2019 09:06

In this update for Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, we get to see a number of new skills and a new feature called 'Animation Cancel', which speeds up your game as the time it takes to use a skill and see the effect is reduced by removing some of the animations.

We’re happy to inform you that this highly anticipated improvement is progressing well, and we plan to make its first version live with the next Content Patch. Developing and tweaking such a system takes time and requires testing in the field, but even if it will be the first version, it will already reduce drastically the feeling of clunkiness in the game.

There are some animated GIFs at the link to show this.

Besides that the Autoturret skill, that places a turret that starts shooting at your opponents, and Warpath, which is a charge skill, are being shown in an animated fashion.

Percy's Last Stand - A Post-Apocalyptic RPG

by Myrthos, Friday - July 19, 2019 08:09

We received word that an indie post-apocalyptic RPG, named Percy's Last Stand will become available on the 25th of July on Steam.

Central Louisiana, the year 2089... the brief peace after World War III ends with the collapse of global computer networks through an unknown virus. With technology halted, people split into different tribes: mutants, cannibals and gangs roam the world while what's left of the army attempts to keep some type of order.

Outpost 72 stands as the lone army base guarding Vernon Lake, a small water source used by the remaining human population of the Louisiana Territory. The outpost sees little activity, except for the occasional mutant attack. Two unimpressive soldiers, among the small percentage of the population born with psionic powers, spend their days guarding the outpost and avoiding responsibility.

Their boredom comes to a sudden halt with the arrival of an alien species that that seeks to research what is happening on Earth, and maybe do something more...

These two soldiers will find themselves at the forefront of a battle for humanity... a hero and his cocker spaniel side kick. He would embark on a grand adventure to discover the mysteries of the universe and humanity. Or maybe the cocker spaniel was the hero and the man was just the side kick. Maybe the cocker spaniel was the salvation of humanity and the man was just tagging along...

-------------------------------------------------

The game was created entirely by one person without any Kickstarter or outside funding and uses a game enginewritten from scratch using Java. It features:

- Over 40 hours of game play that spans across the Solar System.
- Over 150 enemies with unique abilities.
- Develop your characters with different guns, cyber enhancements and psionic magic.
- Play as Percy, the mighty cocker spaniel.
- Explore a large open world - travel to the Moon, Mars, alien spaceships, caves, cities and all sorts of places throughout Central Louisiana.
- Controller support (XBox, Logitech and other standard USB gamepads) and 1600 x 900 resolution.

A Legionary's Life - Version 0.12 Released

by Silver, Thursday - July 18, 2019 12:16

Version 0.12 for A Legionary's Life has been released.

Update 0.12

As usual, most of the development time is being devoted to the Second Macedonian War. I decided against a partial release as it makes little sense to interrupt a game with permadeath in the middle of a campaign. I'm sorry I can't give you a date yet, but progress has been good and it shouldn't be a long wait. However, I have made time for a small update.

Features and changes
  • Added an option to make combat go slower or faster than normal.
  • Added a VSync option to limit the FPS rate. This is enabled by default.
  • Added an introductory note that appears on the first character creation screen. It should help new players to get an idea of what to expect.
  • The tutorial part about the “thumbs up/down” indicator has been expanded a little to provide an explanation. Unfortunately, in the tutorial I have to be as concise as possible or players could get bored and skip it, missing important information.
  • If you kill the leader of the mercenaries in a settlement during a foraging mission, you are rewarded with a Cup.
  • The bracelet stolen from the enemy camp yields 121 denarii instead of 28 if you share the profit with Nasidius. If you kill Nasidius and take it all for yourself (your Virtue has to be pretty low for this option to show up), you get 242 denarii instead of 56.
  • Changed “Malus” to a more understandable “Penalty” in item descriptions.
  • The max quality of items generated in shops is now capped at 6 instead of 8.
  • The base damage of spears has been reduced to 4-15 from 5-16.
  • The Awareness penalty of Etrusco-Corinthian helmets has been reduced from 5 to 4.

Edge Of Eternity - Chapter 3 in Early Access

by Myrthos, Thursday - July 18, 2019 10:42

The third chapter, The Reunion, of Edge of Eternity is now available in Early Access.

Edge of Eternity gets third chapter "The Reunion" in major update today

Free expansion brings hours of new content

17th July 2019, Montpellier, France, Developer Midgard Studio and publisher Dear Villagers today announced the third free major update to their ambitious Early Access JRPG Edge of Eternity, which is currently available on Steam Early Access. The story continues with The Reunion, secrets revealed, a shocking betrayal and a noble sacrifice in chapter 3 of the Edge of Eternity saga.

Featuring around 3-4 hours of additional gameplay and new areas to explore, this highly anticipated update sees the adventurers stretched to their limit, fleeing from the horrors of the night and searching for hope in the face of insurmountable odds.

Edge of Eternity will also be on sale on Wednesday 15th July at 7PM CET | 10AM PST in the Steam Daily Deal with 20% off the base price. All owners of Edge of Eternity will receive this third update update for free.

Free major updates will continue to expand the game world, improve existing content, and adding major new story chapters throughout the Early Access period, ahead of the full launch on PC next year.

Edge of Eternity was made possible by over 4000 fans who made the game a reality via a successful Kickstarter campaign. The crowdfunding was so successful that Midgard Studio were able to work with the legendary JRPG composer of Chrono Trigger Yasunori Mitsuda. You can hear the result of that partnership on the latest trailer on the Steam Store Page.

About Edge of Eternity:

  • Ambitious new JRPG adventure being developed by 9-person indie studio, taking influences from both Japanese & Western RPGs

  • On Steam Early Access now, with the game world expanding and major new story chapters added throughout the Early Access period

  • Full launch will be coming PC next year

  • Successfully Kickstarted by fans in 2015, reaching almost 4x the campaign goal

  • A stunning soundtrack including contributions from Chrono Trigger & Xenoblade Chronicles composer Yasunori Mitsuda

We have been informed by its developer that Minima, a retro adventure RPG inspired by the old-school Ultima series as played on the Commodore 64/128 back in the '80s, has been updated. The update fixes all known bugs and also makes it available on a Raspberry Pi.

You can find and download the game on Itch.io. You can also find the link there to play the game online. Or you can download the source code at Github.

Black Geyser - Backer Beta Preview and Music

by Myrthos, Tuesday - July 16, 2019 10:12

A soundtrack of Black Geyser has been made available in video form.

After our last update, many of you complimented us on the music that played when the party first came outdoors into Vintner’s Grove. We thought you might enjoy if we shared it as a standalone track in this update. The following is from our official soundtrack.

Alsoan additional video expanding on the one from the May update has been made available.

Today we are also sharing a follow-up video to our last one. Its focus, as with our May update, is on dialogue and story elements, while demonstrating more of our UI and how areas of the game can change due to certain factors (in this case, time and interdimensional travel!).

Our party is on the hunt for an antidote that will save Stephan and his men from the terrible poison inflicted by a magical trap. Finding it requires using a dangerous cursed stone to travel to the past. Will we be able to locate the antidote in time? What dangers lurk in the Cult of Zoria’s hideout? Watch the video below for the exciting conclusion to our side quest: Trapped Under the Surface.

Underrail - Experimental Branch

by Silver, Thursday - July 11, 2019 11:10

An experimental branch for Underrail that lets you play with the new mechanics

Experimental Branch with Version 1.1.0.5

Tuesday, 09 July 2019 14:52
Hi guys,

In preparation of the expansion release, we're releasing a new version of the base game (on which the current testing version is running on) to make sure that no major breaking bugs have been introduced.

experimental branch pic

Underrail - Experimental Branch

To play experimental branch on Steam, you right click the game in your library and go to "Betas" tab. To do so on GOG, you select the game and choose More->Settings. Make sure you don't override all your live version saves just in case something goes horribly wrong.

Here are the patch notes:

General

  • Added the ability to speed up the game while out of combat
  • Added achievements to the GOG Galaxy version

Feats

  • Kneecap shot bleeding percentage no longer scales from perception, but base bleeding damage percentage changed to 125% (up from 75%)

Mechanics

  • Unarmed and fist weapon attacks now incur 140% of target's damage threshold and resistance (up from 125%)
  • Increased the damage reduction factor of resolve against neural overload
  • Resolve will now reduce the damage received from doppelgangers
  • Changed the way the burning damage stacks (in cases when it stacks) - the new burning time left equals either the time left of the existing effect or the duration of the new effect - whichever is longer; the old and the new periodic damage are adjusted so that they produce the same total damage over time; one of the major effects of this change is that you can no longer increase the amount of original damage by constantly resetting the timer
  • Separated fear effect caused by burning into a separate status effect and limited it to 2 turns regardless of how long the burning lasts (or if it's extinguished early); this will prevent the fear from lasting too long either from a long burning effect or because of the burning effect being refreshed; also this fear only occurs when a non-burning target is ignited and not when burning is being prolonged/refreshed

Items

  • Throwing nets now last up to 2 turns (down from 3) and have a cooldown of 4 turns (up from 3)
  • Bullets have new icons
  • Increased the chance to entangle enemies when firing acid blob pistol
  • Increased the chance to freeze enemies when firing cryo blob pistols
  • Reduced the chance to ignite enemies when firing incendiary blob pistol; the total burning damage done from igniting the target will remain the same, but will be spread over more turns (one turn per each 80% of the original damage repeated)
  • Reduced the weight of chemical ammo

Nice Things

  • Containers that you opened once will now have darker labels
  • Organic enemies that die while burning will now be smoking and appear charred
  • HE grenades and some other explosions will leave temporary marks on the ground
  • Gas clouds will now fade in/out
  • New barrels

Bugs

  • Fixed the bug that would allow player to cancel leveling up without being able to reattempt it
  • Fixed the problem that caused the items to take up weird positions in the filtered inventory when the player attempted to reorder them manually
  • Cut Throat no longer bypasses stun immunities
  • Corporeal Projection feat now has a proper icon (instead of using the one from Fast Metabolism)
  • Throwing knife will now again properly play impact sounds and effects
  • Fixed the bug that caused expertise to add the damage bonus for each separate mechanical damage listed for the weapon, instead of just once (you thought I'd never find out, did you?!)
  • Fixed the hole jump crash in Institute
  • Heavyweight will now always apply before Critical Power
  • Certain giant appendages can now be hit by cryokinetic orb
  • Changed the way the cryokinetic orb shards interact with the orb impact tile so now the creatures occupying the tile can also get hit by some of them
  • Punching bags will no longer bleed when you punch them
  • Global entities (those that can travel between maps) will now also have their suspicion meter drain with time
  • Incendiary chemical pistol burning effect will now stack damage with existing burning effect
  • Fixed the Nimble bug that would in certain situation give bonus movement points
  • Various minor map and dialog bugs

That's it. Let us know how you like the changes.

Shieldwall Chronicles: Swords of the North - Patch 1.6

by Hiddenx, Wednesday - July 10, 2019 20:16

Patch 1.6 for Shieldwall Chronicles: Swords of the North has been released:

Today's 1.6 patch includes a significant amount of new content.

  • New playable character class: The dwarf bombardier is a heavily armoured warrior armed with a medieval handgun. The male variant is a close range fighter / shooter hybrid with a large shield. The female is a longer range marksman with a long rifle. Each has a separate set of skills and stat line to suit their role so play very differently from one another.
  • 3 new extra battle levels added set in the drakefang mountains. These feature large waves of higher level enemies including goblins, monsters and undead.
  • All playable characters (and most enemies) now have passive abilities. These include aura effects and abilities that kick under specific conditions (low health, surrounded, etc.). These abilities add a new layer of tactical depth to the game and help to further differentiate the player characters and enemy types.
  • There are, of course, the usual round of bug fixes and minor tweaks. Please note that this update also coincided with a major upgrade to the underlying unity engine version. Therefore, if you notice anything strange, please report and we will do our best to fix asap.
