Stellar Tactics - Disable, board, capture and sell enemy ships

by Silver, Saturday - June 20, 2020 04:45
A large update for Stellar Tactics announces that disabling, boarding, capturing and selling enemy ships is now available.

I'm releasing the boarding content patch today. Every ship in the game can be boarded and I'd like to hear your feedback on the new system. This is one of the last core systems that needed to be implemented. It will be important as I expand the current mission system adding more variety, branching missions, and of course for the game story where there will be a number of ships that need to be boarded for various reasons. If you find any issues, please post in the bug forums and I'll take a look. As with all updates, there are likely edge cases and bugs that will only show up when people start playing the new content. I'll keep an eye on the forums and patch out any issues.

As it is, boarding is a nice add-on for the game. Short scenarios that net good returns. You can choose the repair/salvage mechanic for better sale value when contacting Arkus, though it is entirely up to you if you want to take the extra time to do this. No matter what, you will at least need to identify all the broken systems on the ship. Repairing them will develop your repair skill which will be used in future content updates when I expand the mission system. Scrapping components will improve your salvaging skill. More on this below.

With the addition of boarding, sub-system targeting is now in the game. This adds a new tactical layer to space combat allowing you to disable enemy engines, weapons, and systems - giving you time to deal with other ships in multi-ship combat scenarios.

Some of you have expressed an interest in walking around on your own ships. I want to say that this is not off the table. I'll be looking into it and I have some ideas I think you will like.

Others have mentioned that they want to keep the ships. Again, not off the table. I'll be looking into ways to expand the boarding system so you can earn ships through Arkus over time.

So whats next?
  • I'll be wrapping up the new perk system, rewarding perks earlier and more often. The next patch will complete all perks for the game including crafting, salvaging, and repair.
  • I'll be adding the new special weapon attacks. These will be rewarded at various skill levels and include active skills that can be placed in the two empty combat bar slots. This will round out the ground combat system nicely.
  • The weapon and armor repair system.
  • Expanding the mission system. Now that all core requirements are in the game - I can start working on making missions more varied, adding missions with multiple objects, and more.

Sense - Aiming for August Release

by Silver, Friday - June 19, 2020 10:38

Cyberpunk horror game Sense is aiming for an August release according to the latest Kickstarter update.

We still have a small number of assets to complete on the art end; some cutscene animations, props, and some remaining music/sfx, but we do not anticipate this taking any more than 2-3 weeks to finish up. Our plan is to continue testing until the first week in June while making daily updates to the testing build based on what we continue to find internally and the feedback we receive, and from there make a firm decision about our release date then based on the results.

This means that we, unfortunately, will likely push back the PC digital release until August. The good news is that if such, the PC release will simul-release along the console versions, as they were already planned to release in that time-frame. Do not worry, we will still need to have the game complete and sent to the various platforms for their QA and approvals by early July to make sure that our logistics all work out as planned. Our publisher, Top Hat, has several releases lined up for July so we also don't want to crowd their release schedule, nor make other developers delay their own games because of our own scheduling. In full transparency, the August release is looking very likely, but I want to assure every one of you that this is not a "typical kickstarter game" situation. The game is nearly ready (hence why QA backers have received it already), we just want to make sure that our first impression is an amazing one, not one we have to fix with patches over time with. We are still operating under our original development schedule internally. This also still falls within the original plan to have console versions launch before the end of summer as mentioned above, which would be under an August release schedule. PSVITA release should be completely unaffected by today's news. We are still on our original schedule regarding PSVITA, and this has been discussed with EastAsiaSoft. If for whatever reason, however, we are able to launch in June we will let everyone know sometime around the 6th!

Vaporum: Lockdown - Releasing Summer 2020

by Silver, Friday - June 19, 2020 10:30

Vaporum: Lockdown will be releasing this summer of 2020.

Hey, fellow crawlers!

We are sorry to inform you that we have to delay the release of Vaporum: Lockdown. This is nothing too special with what's going on in the world, but still, we feel you deserve more than a dry announcement.

Although nobody in our team has been affected by the disease directly, working from home has had a significant impact on the project. It's been a big challenge organization-wise. During this finish-line phase, the remaining tasks tend to be small but many. Which requires more communication than actual work, and that's difficult, as we can't deal with things face to face. No matter, our 5-member team is pushing through the issues as best as we can; it simply takes more time.

To be specific: we're in the last phase of environmental work on levels, scripting / balancing the last few remaining puzzles, tweaking enemy animations & timings, and working on the game's boss fight (which we are very excited about!). Also, some of the nice things like intro & outro cinematics are coming together.

The release day is drawing near, slowly coming out of the mist, the more we work on the game. Our current estimate is that we will be able to announce a specific release date for the PC (Steam, GOG, etc.) roughly within a month, and that it will be released during the Summer of 2020. Consoles will follow shortly after, beginning with the Nintendo Switch (being tested along with the PC version), and then XB1 and PS4.

It's mostly because there are a lot of onboarding steps for each platform, and we can only do so much with such a small team. Originally, we wanted to avoid a staggered release like this, but at least we'll do our best to release on each platform in the shortest possible time. We're not happy with it, but in a team with only 2 programmers, it's virtually impossible to work on the base PC version and all the ports at once, and release the game everywhere on the same day. Such an approach would also cause a significant delay of the PC release, and we don't think that would be fair to our players either.

One of the good things is that the game will be localized in all the languages as in Vaporum - but from day one (of course still allowing you guys to write your own translations).

You can trust that we're doing our very best to make the game a worthy prequel to Vaporum, with all the new features working towards a much better player experience.

Thank you for your understanding! We just can't wait till you lay your hands on the game! :)

Stay strong & healthy!

Thanks Farflame!

Dead Age 2 - Early Access Delayed to July 16th

by Silver, Tuesday - June 02, 2020 19:07

Dead Age 2 has a slight delay to its Early Access debut on Steam, the target date is now July 16th.

Early Access Launch slightly delayed

Dear survivors,

Unfortunately we have a slight delay to announce: Due to the necessary work adjustments during the COVID-19 lockdown which were necessary to keep everyone at good health, the current version of Dead Age 2 did not quite reach the technical quality standards that we have set and wanted to achieve for the Early Access Release on June 3rd – we are close but simply not 100% there yet…

As we strive for the highest quality even for an Early Access release and as we feel we also owe this to you, the players, we mutually decided to postpone the Early Access to July 16, 2020 to secure the best possible game experience.

We apologize to everyone who counted down the last couple of weeks. And please believe us: This decision was not easy for us. But striving for excellence, we humbly ask for your understanding in this matter. Thank you for your patience, and rest assured that we can’t wait for you all to get your hands on what has been created over the last three years…

All the best and stay healthy!

Drox Operative 2 - Early Access

by Myrthos, Monday - June 01, 2020 19:51

Drox Operative 2 has entered Early Access on Steam.

Anna, Texas, June 1, 2020 - Drox Operative 2 is now in Early Access on Steam!

Gamers who buy Drox Operative 2 Early Access will receive full access to the latest alpha build, a reduced price of only $14.99 (10% off first week), the opportunity to give Soldak feedback which can influence the game, and of course, the final version when it becomes available.

Drox Operative 2 is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Linux.

Eons ago the Drox crushed and enslaved the ancient races and ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was so devastating that the Drox are now extinct. The Drox Operative guild, now fully independent, survived.

Newer races emerged and thrived in the power void ... for a while. Then the ancients returned. The wars were devastating, but with the Drox Operatives on their side, the ancients were beaten back and a truce was established.

Since the devastation, a 4th wave of sentient races are emerging in the galaxy. Unlike previous waves, there are thousands in this one and no one knows anything about them. In the new space race, the ancient, mature, and young races are all scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy through diplomacy, technology, war, and any other means necessary.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage an empire, you are after all the captain of a single starship. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the deadliest ship in the known universe. Who will you back as an Operative? The ancient, mature, or young races? The pacifist or militaristic races? The xenophile or xenophobe races? The races that value freedom or the races that use slave labor? The strong or the weak? Your actions and inactions will impact trillions of alien lives!

Features:

* Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
* Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
* Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
* Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
* Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
* Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
* Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer
* Essentially play an action RPG inside a universe of alien races playing a 4X game

Tale of Ronin - Interview @Escapist Magazine

by Silver, Monday - June 01, 2020 09:42

The developers of Tale of Ronin were interviewed by Escapist Magazine.

The likelihood of success will depend in part upon three stats — energy, courage, and mind — which contribute to the overall focus of each combatant. “Trying to reduce the focus of your opponent to find an opening to attack can be a sound strategy,” said Fassihi.

Narrative events will also influence battle psychology and will be powered by another set of stats that measure the protagonist’s mental state. This system is designed to tap into the team’s mission of humanizing the ronin and presenting the realities of their conflicted life of revenge, uncertainty, shame, and friendship.

Fassihi provided a handful of examples of how this idea will emerge during the gameplay experience: “Camaraderie is a gameplay stat for the characters in a party. It is a bond between them. This bond could increase or decrease based on their shared experiences, whether adventuring or in combat. The value of camaraderie will then affect the narrative events or the battle.

“The reverse of ‘honor,’ which is ‘shame,’ is another important stat for the characters. The gamer needs to make sure this shame does not exceed a specific limit. The value will affect the game narrative. Betrayal can happen everywhere in the story.”

The concept of having a central weapon that can transform and take different shapes is an interesting one. How much variety does this inject into combat, and how many different weapon forms will there be in the game?

The real potential Mjolnir offers the player to choose between different weapon types. It is possible to use Mjolnir as a sword, a hammer or even as a bow. Especially the bow provides a wide selection of arrows like fire and ice types. To be victorious, it is essential for the player to know his opponents. Each opponent is characterized by his own strengths and weaknesses. This will always present the player with new challenges.

You’ve mentioned Zelda as an influence on Soulborn– can you speak about that a little more and how it impacts the game’s structure?

Without a doubt, Zelda is a great inspiration for us. Further, we really love puzzles and dungeons. So instead of just defeating enemies to earn the best equipment we want to create different types of challenges for our audience. That way we try to keep the gaming experience and joy at a high level through the whole game.

How much of an emphasis does the game put on exploration? Is it incentivized through things such as optional dungeons?

Exploration is one of the main elements of Soulborn, so we want to make it as rewarding as we can. Besides tricky puzzles and challenging fights there will be much more that players can enjoy, like secret dungeons, hidden places, crafting systems and so on.
